DH and I were pretty much decided on the name George for a boy. However, I've been idly reading the baby names topic today and I've come across the name Arthur.

I love it. Particularly shortened to Art.

My problem that our surname is Clarke. Does anyone think this might be a problem due to this chap?

So, Arthur or George? Any other suggestions gratefully received.

I love Arthur and would have used it if I had had a DS...BUT it is a problem with the surname Clarke. Unfortunately one that isn't going to go away as his writing is so prolific and popular. I guess the question is can you live with the inevitable "did you name him after" comments?

Issy123 · 10/03/2009 21:30

I prefer George

namechangedtofindaname · 10/03/2009 21:31

I thought as much.

I have a feeling we discarded it with DS for that very reason.

Hmm. I think I like it more than George.

I like Arthur but don;t think you can use it with your surname. Sorry. George is good.

Btw when did science fiction cross over into HR practice?

singyswife · 10/03/2009 21:31

this man

squeaver · 10/03/2009 21:32

he's an architect you know, singy. He doesn't like to mention it too much.

singyswife · 10/03/2009 21:34

Yes, thanks for that. BTW, I know a little boy called George and it is a fantastic name. He really suits it and it is never a name I would have put down for a child. Go with your gut insinct and ignore the 'named after' comments.

wheesht · 10/03/2009 21:36

Neither, sorry. Again, they are both like cap and pipe names to me... and my dad's name is George.

Do like Art though

namechangedtofindaname · 10/03/2009 21:42

DH has just come home and agreed that Arthur isn't going to happen.

Ah well.

Thanks everyone. I've never heard of George Clarke so can put up with that one!

Back to the drawing board...

`oh dear, Arthur is a gorgeous name. George is good too but quite prolific in the school that I teach in.

squeaver · 10/03/2009 22:21

Should have put a after my last comment. Sarcasm just doesn't work on here sometimes.

Springhassprung · 11/03/2009 14:45

I prefer Arthur

Do many people shorten it to Wart?

PestoMonster · 11/03/2009 14:46

I love Arthur. Very cute IMO

wotulookinat · 11/03/2009 15:01

Both names are great. I love the name George, but I wouldn't use it as I had an ex called George. Arthur is a great name, and I'd love to use it but DH had an uncle called Arthur who died when he was very young or something and so he doesn't want to use it.
IMO, go for Arthur, but George is fab too!

Arthur is a brilliant name, familiar but not popular.

There are a couple of short versions too:
Art
Artie
Artu (scandinavian nn)
