ok, 2 of my friends in North America have recently called their children this.

One is a boy.

One is a girl.

What do y'all think of it?

I think I shall call my next one 'granton-on-spey'

ilovegreenbeans · 04/03/2009 13:13

one boy, one girl. Middle names are normal. And yes, I'm sure it would be lun-din or lun-dun. Boy I can almost get my head around. Glad you all can't see it for a girl either.

My parents live close to two towns called Lindsay and Bethany in Canada. I'm not against place names. I actually really like the name Brooklyn. Just think London is a bit much.

Oh you could have a field day naming children after places in the UK - Nether Wallop, Upton Scudamore, Biggleswade.....

georgiemum · 04/03/2009 14:02

Grimsby

KERALA1 · 04/03/2009 14:05

I knew an American girl who called her baby Camden (and we were all LIVING in Camden). Just...bad. They needed to move back to the US fast.

georgiemum · 04/03/2009 14:08

Lordy. Why don't people just use... people names for people?

LuLuBai · 04/03/2009 14:22

Isn't one of Britney's kids called Preston?

frazzledoldbag · 04/03/2009 14:44

Oooh shall I call my impending DS 'Auchtermuchty'? Has a memorable ring to it I reckon.....

LuLuBai · 04/03/2009 14:52

I think there is somebody called Auchtermuchty in a book I have read. Possibly an Alexander McCall-Smith?

What's wrong with Bognor?

FairLadyRantALot · 04/03/2009 14:55

My es likes watching a terrible Disney programme, I think it is called Zak and Drake- but that might be a different equally horrid programme , anywya, there is a very stupid and spoiled character in that programme called London/Landon...

chaya5738 · 04/03/2009 16:19

Eeek, what is with the anti-American sentiment in this thread? I have heard of plenty of British children called "Brooklyn." I can't say that the British have an upperhand on classy names, TBH. Sorry, just kinda cranky. I am not American but the amount of anti-Americanism around at the moment is bordering on racism.

kittywise · 04/03/2009 16:41

c'mon, Americans do give far far more ridiculous names to their children, they are the world masters at looney names.

georgiemum · 04/03/2009 16:43

Peanut. I rest my case.

kittywise · 04/03/2009 17:18

that's racist against nuts that is

Wolfblass · 04/03/2009 18:27

ooooh noooo - not at all, really do not like it.

Our neice is called Nevada, not named this because she was conceieved there, just beacuse her parents thought it sounded cool back then (poor thing)

We named our dd now 5 Georgia (well in all honesty Georgia-Mae) and were asked why we named her after an American 'place', until that day i never realised we had.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 04/03/2009 18:32

Ahem. I claimed the name Auchtermuchty first. It was on a thread like this several months ago that I said that the second child I will never have would be called Dagenham Auchtermuchty.

So there.

Nothing against Americans - just that place names as first names does seem more popular over there than here. If thats racist well

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 04/03/2009 18:36

Here in a discussion about Kendal for a girl. Apologies for the poor spelling.

frazzledoldbag · 04/03/2009 19:28

MadBad that's just reminded me of a friend who always wanted to call her first born 'Debenham'. Fortunately she didn't in the end. [phew]

LuLuBai · 05/03/2009 06:29

What did she go with in the end frazzled? BHS?

nooka · 05/03/2009 06:40

If they chose it because of the Suite Life of Zack and Cody then they are very sad indeed as it is a truly awful programme (my dd likes it) and the London character is particularly obnoxious (ditzy, stupid and rather crass).

I really dislike places as names, whether they are English, American or really from anywhere. With an exception for places named after people I suppose Because slebs seem to like it I guess it is quite wannabe.

I once met a child called America. Awful

Lawks · 05/03/2009 06:46

I think place names are great.

I have a boy called Hawaii (pronounced Howey) and a girl called Berlynne (pronounced like the city, but we softened the spelling a bit).

kiwibella · 05/03/2009 16:05

I remember a few years ago when a baby was born on a Virgin flight - named Virginia and given free flights for her lifetime!!

LuLuBai · 05/03/2009 17:33

Better be booking me a flight on Virgin for about -oooh five weeks time .
