Would you say Robyn with a Y is male or female?

I'd say female. Very American sounding to me.

PuppyMonkey · 25/02/2009 14:54

Always a female where I live.

WowOoo · 25/02/2009 14:55

Female.

intheLiffey · 25/02/2009 15:02

Hmmmmmm. I'd just spell it Robin. I think it's gone to the girls anyway. You don't need the y to spell it out.

(Like Vivien and Leslie and Meredith, just don't think this one is going to be used again for men.)

Leave it with the i, like the bird. that's what gives it its charm.

Otherwise it might be Robben like the Island, or the footballer. Not so nice imo!

Robin Susannah or Robin Olivia eg would spell it out loud and loud, and when she's older she can be Miss/Ms or Mrs.

I think Sam and Chris are MORE confusing. I would honestly assume that a child called Robin was a girl.

DebiTheScot · 25/02/2009 15:08

female however it's spelt.

LunarSea · 25/02/2009 15:09

Female. You can check on the relative popularity of names/spellings for boys/girls on the Bounty site.

PuppyMonkey · 25/02/2009 15:23

Debi I know two male Robins (one a boy of 13).

I also come from Nottingham, where an even more famous male called Robin used to hang out.

jellybeans · 25/02/2009 15:23

female

crokky · 25/02/2009 15:33

I would think of Robyn as female and Robin as male.

TooFoggy · 25/02/2009 17:36

So, reassure me, there is no way Robyn is male?

I am negotiating a childs birthday party You know the sort of thing, six boys and six girls only, dont want to get it wrong!

I went to school with a Robin who was male, but it was a while ago, back in the ahem70's. These days it seems to be a girls name, as does Rowan. I quite like it and if I were baby naming would go with the I not the Y.

Female

BikeRunSki · 25/02/2009 17:48

Robyn = young girl
Robin = Bloke over 50 or born in late December.

giraffescantdancethetango · 25/02/2009 17:49

99.9% sure will be female

Tarantella · 25/02/2009 17:50

Robyn very Australian in my experience (and girly) Shame as I like Robin for a boy

Its like Cameron which I would have always considered male until I inadvertently invited a female Cameron (thinking she was male ) to my son's birthday party.(new school) The mother said ' Oh I called her after Cameron Diaz!'

ZakuroFujiwara · 25/02/2009 17:51

For what it's worth I do know a male Robyn - aged mid-30s - but have always thought it was the "wrong" spelling ever since I have known him.

dinkymum · 25/02/2009 22:08

Female i'd say

Lilyloo · 25/02/2009 22:10

Female, love it. I have very fond memories of a little girl i used to look after as a baBy when i first qualified.
