Do you think siblings names need to "go with each other"?

I have never really understood this but I am not very good when it comes to knowing what goes and what doesn't!

My DD is Eloise and we are thinking about naming the next baby (apparently a girl) Talia. The names (to me) do sound a bit funny together but that might be a bit because I am obviously very close to DD so it isn't just a name iyswim?

Anyway, do you think it matters if the names go together or not?

I don't think that Eloise and Talia do clash - it's not like they'd be called Sunshine Rainbow and Jane, is it?

mrsgboring · 23/02/2009 18:16

Only really matters if it makes you sound slightly mad. For example, names that rhyme, names that are very similar, names that are too much along the same theme (e.g. two main characters from the same book)

I don't see what's wrong with Eloise and Talia (though I'd spell it "Thalia" personally)

Well, mine do, and I thought it mattered. Well, you know, not life or death mattered, but I wanted them to seem like they were chosen by the same person...

TsarChasm · 23/02/2009 18:22

Exactly. As long as they dont rhyme or are incredibly similar I can't see a problem. I don't understand why they have to 'go' together as some threads seem to suggest. Bit confusing if everyone in the family has the same initials too. I know someone who has 3 dd's with the same initials.

Lulubee · 23/02/2009 18:25

I think Thalia and Eliose are both pretty, slightly unusual names of 3 syllables that go together very well actually.

intheLiffey · 23/02/2009 18:28

When I say 'go together' I wouldn't mean similar. LIke Tilly and Holly.

I mean stylistically . Martha and Rachel.
Annie and Lottie. Phoebe and Alice.

These are siblings I know/know of.

lilQuidditchKel · 23/02/2009 18:32

not sure I 'get' the 'go together' concept either, apart from idiotically-obvious examples like Jack and Jill, Hitler and Churchill, or 4 brothers called Billy, Bobby, Brady, and Brandon...

traceybath · 23/02/2009 18:34

I do get this. My two ds's have very traditional names and i'm very conscious when choosing dc3's name that it has to be in the same vein so to speak.

AliceTheCamel · 23/02/2009 18:37

Well I have two daughters called Starfruit-Lili and Maud. And a son called Wayne. I don't see that it matters.

saymyname · 23/02/2009 18:42

Yeah I get it too, I know a Monty and Sarah which seems like a clash to me.

MrsMattie · 23/02/2009 18:45

We didn't think about whether my DC's names 'went together' or not. We just chose names we liked. We only have two, though. If you had, say, Kate, Emma, Joseph and K-Fed that would be weird, yes.

LOL@AliceTheCamel

soon2befamilyof4 · 23/02/2009 18:46

saymyname - so if you think it matters, do you think the 2 names we have in mind are ok together?

LittleMissBliss · 23/02/2009 18:51

Unlike Alice- I wouldn't go to the etremes of an older name and a super....um ...interesting name.
I think the children would be thinking well why did she get the special name and i got the well, not so special name.

Alice- are those really your childrens names i just can't see them coming from the same parents!

LittleMissBliss · 23/02/2009 18:52

*extremes

saymyname · 23/02/2009 18:53

Personally, I don't think they go terribly well. Excuse my ignorance but is Talia greek or similar?

I know someone with an Amelie and an Eloise and they 'go' to me as they're both french.

That said, I really don't think my opinion is important and if you love the name then go for it

Sunflower100 · 23/02/2009 18:53

I think your chosen names sound lovely together soontobe.

LittleMissBliss · 23/02/2009 18:58

But then saying that i have a son with a pretty traditional boys (with an unusual shortening) name. If i had a girl would choose a more unusual name, because i have one and like it. But if i had another boy i would stick to the traditional route.

If i went on to have two girls they would both have more unusual names.

All sounds a bit confusing.

AliceTheCamel · 23/02/2009 18:59

Yes they are.

I'm expecting a 4th and we're thinking Marie-France for a girl, and either Keanu or Peregrine for a boy.

MrsMattie · 23/02/2009 19:00

Are you for real?@Alice.

Starfruit, Maud & Wayne.

Seriously?

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 23/02/2009 19:01

No. I don't think they do. My two have very different names.

(psst..I knew a couple called Daryl and Debbie and their sons Darren and Dean - PLEASE avoid anything like that!! )

LittleMissBliss · 23/02/2009 19:03

Alice- I must say that when i read your post i was a bit.

But if those really are your DCs names i'm sorry if my post is rude in any way. Its just i have never come across a family with such different styles of names.

malfoy · 23/02/2009 19:04

Ella was banned as a name for DD because DS is Sam.

DH thought Sam & Ella sounded ridiculous.

LittleMissBliss · 23/02/2009 19:05

I'm taking that as no then

purepurple · 23/02/2009 19:07

malfoy, I do know someone with both a sam and an ella!! makes me smile evrytime
