Super name. It's my son's middle name.

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 17/02/2009 12:25

I love it. wasn't allowed it though

LittleMissBliss · 17/02/2009 12:26

Our ds is called Jacob and and every one says what a lovely name it is, even though he never gets called it He's been Coby for short from pretty much birth. But i introduce him as Jacob.

But i think Jacob is a lovely strong propper name for him to grow into. He never gets called Jake either.

diedandgonetodevon · 17/02/2009 12:28

I love it!

(Coby for short is great too, much better than Jake)

MrsMattie · 17/02/2009 12:29

Lovely. Considered it for DD if she'd been a boy.

dizzydixies · 17/02/2009 12:31

I love it but then I am overly fond of cream crackers too

please don't use Jake as a shortening, it doesn't do Jacob justice at all

great choice!

Wheelybug · 17/02/2009 12:37

Great name - a distinct possibility for DC2, due in 3 weeks although currently not sure about the Jake/Jacob tihng (DH likes Jake, I prefer keeping it as Jacob and don't want to be one of those mothers who's the only person in the world to call their child by their full name)

BalloonSlayer · 17/02/2009 12:48

All the Jacobs I know tend to get called Jay for short.

I think it's a lovely name but didn't want it as it means Supplanter. (sorry)

LittleMissBliss · 17/02/2009 12:58

Balloon- Just googled Supplanter as i ahd no clue what it ment,

Noun 1. supplanter - one who wrongfully or illegally seizes and holds the place of another
usurper
offender, wrongdoer - a person who transgresses moral or civil law
claim jumper - one who illegally occupies property to which another has a legal claim

And it's nothing horric thank god, just my son's a squatter! Lol

As i have never heared that before i doubt many people would think Jacob= supplanter.

jrsqueak · 17/02/2009 13:06

I love it - it is my ds's name

audley · 17/02/2009 14:03

Sorry but I'm with Balloon, I always think that it's a nice name but nasty meaning.

buttercreamfrosting · 17/02/2009 14:21

Love it - nearly used it for ds2, but didn't because of the meaning.
Having said that I probably would have used it for a first child as he wouldn't have had anyone before him to supplant IYSWIM....
I accept I may be over-thinking this...

BalloonSlayer · 17/02/2009 19:45

James means the same btw.

Don't wish to offend but I am constantly surprised by the amount of people who will name a child without knowing what the name means.

Jacob in the bible story conned his elder brother out of his birthright, hence the name's meaning, presumably.

Like buttercream, it was an option for DS2 but didn't seem appropriate for that reason. I also rejected Seth as he was the child born to Adam and Eve after Cain had killed Abel . . . bad connotations to me!

hannahsaunt · 17/02/2009 20:07

Wonderful name. Not that I'm biased . And I rather think ds1 and 2 may rather agree with the meaning... No shortenings in this house.

hannahsaunt · 17/02/2009 20:08

But he does get called Peg. And Pegster.

blametheparents · 17/02/2009 20:09

Fantastic choice

LittleMissBliss · 17/02/2009 20:25

I'm an atheist so it means nada to me, to me the bible is a story but that's another thread. We liked the name. That's that. Also dp is called James! his older brother better watch his back

Names can have many meaning in different languages, positive in one and negative in another.
