Does Andrew sound old-fashioned?

Hi, I'd welcome some honest opinions.

I'm 29 weeks pregnant, no idea what I'm having, but struggling with boys names.

I like Andrew, but I wonder if it sounds a bit old-fashioned these days, for a small child. It's still around, but not common - number 99 on list for 2007. I know it's nice to avoid really common names (and end up being one of 5 in a class, as I was!), but I also don't want my child to have a name that's considered weird by his peers.

Also, my DS is called Matthew - does Andrew sound too similar (same ending)?

Thanks, all thoughts welcome, be honest, I won't be hurt!

Not old-fashioned at all imo.

Does kind of rhyme with Matthew, but they are both such lovely names that you could get away with it.

Tommy · 17/02/2009 10:21

my friend has just named her DS Andrew!

I think Matthew and Andrew sound lovely - good, classic, solid ("proper" as my Mum would say) names

oopsRonanOGarascoconuts · 17/02/2009 10:21

I like it. DH is Andrew but we call him Rew or Drew as he hates being called Andy.

Bucharest · 17/02/2009 10:22

It's classic, timeless.
I wish more people would use names like this instead of the His- name- is -Joshua -but- we- spell- it- Kayden- brigade.

nickytwotimes · 17/02/2009 10:25

Exactly! Classical, timeless, "proper".

PuzzleRocks · 17/02/2009 10:26

DH and his brother are an Andrew and a Matthew. They sound fine together.

woodenspoon2 · 17/02/2009 10:26

Hmm, swimming against the tide, I think there are solid old-fashioned names which are less dull. something a bit weak and crao about Andy, to me anyway. But it's all personal taste. I like John or Daniel better eg.

GossipMonger · 17/02/2009 10:27

and Drew is lovely as a nname.

Matthew and Drew - it does rhyme though.

Benedict
James
Sam
Thomas
Michael

piscesmoon · 17/02/2009 10:28

A lovely name. It can't be old fashioned it is biblical and timeless.

wastingmyeducation · 17/02/2009 10:29

It'll be Matt and Andy when they get to school though.

woodenspoon2 · 17/02/2009 10:30

Benjamin. Joseph.

piscesmoon · 17/02/2009 10:33

A disadvantage is that you won't be able to stop it being shortened.

branflake81 · 17/02/2009 10:36

I had a dream last night that I gave birth to a baby called Andrew (am not even pregnant, btw!) - perhaps it's a premonition.

Cies · 17/02/2009 10:37

I like it.

Others for your thoughts:

Peter
Richard
Michael
John
Paul

MrsBadger · 17/02/2009 10:41

I like it but like woodespoon I couldn;t hack Andy

David? Daniel? James? Christopher? Alastair? Adam?

blueshoes · 17/02/2009 10:54

Good solid name

Rebecca41 · 17/02/2009 10:57

Thanks everyone.

A lot of the other "solid" names (which I also like) have already been taken by close friends I see regularly, so it would cause confusion. Pity we couldn't all bag the names we liked in our early 20s!

Rebecca41 · 17/02/2009 11:38

And just think! He'd probably be the only Andrew in his class!

My boys list when pg was:
Peter, Patrick, Richard, Michael, Jonathan.

MrsBadger · 17/02/2009 12:04

nappy you make me laugh

someone who wants something 'classic, timeless and proper' is not going to go for Biff, Rocky, Cillian or Grayson...

nappyaddict · 17/02/2009 12:34

OK I'm with you on Rocky!

LuLuBai · 17/02/2009 14:05

?

Did nappyaddict just spit out a whole baby name book?

Loving Ambrose and Oswald. (Must be the pregnancy hormones )

Andrew is a perfectly good, solid, reliable name. Absolutely nowt wrong with Andrew. Several people I know have had Edwards lately and I think it is in a very similar vein to that (and not just cos the Queen has one of each either).

LuLuBai · 17/02/2009 14:06

nappyaddict - is Florence in there for a joke?
