For boys he likes: Ace, Slevin and Art.

I laughed until I realised that he was serious. It can't just be me that thinks this sounds like a joke list. Is it?

Also, he seems to think that my suggestion of Orla for a girl is laughable.

Ozziegirly · 17/02/2009 03:12

On a particular message board with rather strict sensors, I'm afraid the name "Orla" is used as an anagram for a certain sexual act.

So is Alan.

Ozziegirly · 17/02/2009 03:12

FFS - censors!

Jesus.

MrsMattie · 17/02/2009 08:25

Your DH;s list is a bit 'rock star'.

Orla is 'meh' to me. It reminds me of older, slightly boring Irish cousins.

4andnotout · 17/02/2009 08:35

DP wanted to name DD2 Spartacus Velocorapter

He was deadly serious and sober

Then for DD4 he wanted Vicky, not Victoria

As you can imagine he isn't allowed anymore naming input.

LuLuBai · 17/02/2009 08:45

Spartacus Velocorapter? A boy's name surely?

My DH's boys name list has 3 distinct style:

Names he has used for characters in computer games - eg. Sword

Retro (but not yet cool) names - e.g. Cecil

Unisex (but not really suitable for a boy in this country, century etc ) - e.g. Valeri, Evelyn

On this basis alone I hope we have a girl.

Good luck with your DP. Pray for a long pregnancy to persuade him to come round to your way of thinking, or use the moments just after you have pushed a whopping baby out of your body to twist his arm and get your way.

(P.S. I rather like Art, but with Ash it's not going to work. Slavin Ash will be dubbed 'Slash', Ace Ash sounds like A Sash - the sort of thing a beauty queen would wear...)

2pt4kids · 17/02/2009 08:49

My DH has TERRIBLE taste in names too. i sympathise.
We worked around it in the end by me writing a list of all the names I'd be happy with and he chose from that list! I hated ALL his names so veto'd them early on!
Actually thats what we did with DS1. We ended up with a really good compromise.
With DS2 it didnt work quite as well as I had a mad hormone induced moment shortly after giving birth and announced DS2's name as something I just decided on at that moment without discussing with DH.
He came round in the end

4andnotout · 17/02/2009 08:53

2pt4 dd4's name was like that, i woke up the morning after she was born and told the midwife her name would be Tilly-Grace, i casually rang dp and told him i'd named the baby.

lulu25 · 17/02/2009 08:55

lol @ ozric

mine liked "autechre", for any Warp fans out there

PeachyHasABrokenKeyboardSorry · 17/02/2009 09:12

'Slavin Ash will be dubbed 'Slash''

sadly I think you are generous: my money is on

'avin a slash'

Flightattendant27 · 17/02/2009 09:32

Slevin?

What?

Levin is nice trad name. Ace is silly. art short for Arthur is lovely, twas my great grandad's name

Orla is Ok.

I had a boyfriend when I was pregnant the first time who thought the baby might be his (well there was a very very slender chance ) and he wanted to call it Hereward.

I think if it was female it was going to be something equally erm - historical. Ethelberta or something. He was completely serious. Thank feck it wasn't his...

newgirl · 17/02/2009 11:47

orla and alan - well you learn something new every day

kitty78 · 17/02/2009 12:56

I think Art is a fab name, if its shortened from Arthur. Think yourself lucky my OH has terrible, terrible, terrible taste in names but is not quite as inventive as yours, he just favours the type screamed loudly by tracksuit bottom clad mothers in shopping centres, most usually followed by "GET HERE NOW"!!!

monkeyfeathers · 17/02/2009 14:25

4andnotout: Spartacus Velocorapter? How old is he? 6? Even for a boy that'd be truly horrible.

LuLuBai: When I had my first, I didn't discuss names with anyone at all, and then after he was born I just announced that he was going to be called Aidan. No one seemed to mind. So if the OH's name choices don't improve in the next 7 months then I will be using the fact that I have to endure labour to get exactly what I want. I also plan on enlisting his mother's help in persuading him that it's a bad idea to give your kid a name that is ridiculous and/or sounds horrible with the surname (he doesn't seem to think this matters). Apparently he wants any son of his to have a name from/befitting a 1980s movie action hero. I'm just waiting for him to suggest Rambo!

kitty78: My cousins seem to share your OH's taste in names. It doesn't help that they all have strong Glaswegian accents, which make them sound even worse than they might otherwise.

Worryingly my OH thinks his taste in names is 'strong and classic'. Who is he kidding? Since when was Slevin 'classic'?

Arthur Ashe = first black man to win wimbledon singles.

Apparently, also cockney rhyming slang for having a slash though...

sleepyeyes · 17/02/2009 15:04

I know an ART his full name is Arthur.

woodenspoon2 · 17/02/2009 15:09

After approximately 40,000 hours of discussion on each occasion, DP and I have managed to name three children. there will be some tiny subset of names you can agree on. But it may take you a long long time to find them.

kitsmummy · 17/02/2009 15:56

Well my dd is Orla, so what about my ds name, Kit, if it's a boy? Yes, your husbnd's names are gross!

jemart · 17/02/2009 18:06

Arthur is a nice name.

For girls I'd suggest something more old fashioned like Alexandra, Madeleine, Elizabeth, Victoria.

Rammit · 17/02/2009 18:13

lol at orla and alan (euphemisms, not names) but please link to the site so I can larf my hooves off

Men should not name children.

blackrock · 17/02/2009 18:13

I came up with a list of about fifteen names i liked. Handed this to DH who liked none of them

He then suggested two names. One i really disliked and the other I loved, but avoided because of family issues on my side.

We chose that name.

LuLuBai · 17/02/2009 18:31

I actually persuaded my DH to read a baby name book from cover to cover. He finished it, declared it crap and decided he only liked one name in the whole book (apparently Valeri, Sword etc weren't in there). I have conceded that he can have that one name as a middle name for next DC (even if it is a bit ).

Smallholder · 17/02/2009 18:38

My XDP wanted Grizelda for DD. Emphasis on "X". Apologies to any Grizeldas out there. Probably few, mercifully.
Orla is a lovely name.

lemonstartree · 17/02/2009 22:49

my dh suggested 'Loumis' ' Baloo' and 'Vespaisian' for our first born son.

I ignored him - what else can you do - and the child is called Jacob..

take charge - after the birth

harpomarx · 17/02/2009 23:02

pmsl at Loumis, Baloo and Vespaisian.

Loumis - hillbilly
Baloo - bear, obviously
Vespaisian - the next big indie band

ex dh favoured King and Shabaz. I kind of like 'em...

honeydew · 17/02/2009 23:52

Slevin- has your DH ever seen a film called 'Lucky Number Slevin' with Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman which came out a couple of years ago? It's a mafia crime thriller that won a few awards.

I've not seen it but I've never heard of the name Slevin before so I looked it up as I was curious and that's what came up.

Slevin? No- absolutely not. He'll get teased in the playground which wouldn't be fair.

My mother wanted me to call my son Aragorn from Lord of the Rings -needless to say I ignored her advice! I do actually like it but couldn't lumber my child with that.

Perhaps if I were a celebrity I'd consider it!

Art-no but Arthur, yes.
Ace- no no no no and no
Orla- yes quite nice and feminine.

lemonstartree- Vespaisian?!!!!! PMSL at that - it's made my evening. Perhaps your DH should have considered the alternatives too of other Roman Emperors such as Elagabalus, Hadrian, Gordian, Septimius Severus or perhaps even Caligula? Sorry- couldn't resist!
