One syllable surname - which names go with that?

DP and I really like Faith for a girl but i'm not sure if you can have 2 one-syllable names together or whether it sounds weird?
Other names I like (he's not so keen on) are Zoe and Jemima.
Both like Milo for a boy as it's a family name - but will poor kid get laughed at?

Milo is pretty mainstream now - I don't like it myself but it's not overly odd or outlandish.

We have a one-syllable surname too and also considered Zoe - DH had a definite preference for shorter, less frilly names for girls and we worked hard to find one that didn't sound too harsh with a short surname. Eventually we vetoed one-syllables names eg Jane, Kate and Grace and worked on the Megan, Rachel, Judith, Helen vein.

SlartyBartFast · 16/02/2009 10:27

don't think it really matters personally. ANd how many times do you put the two names together in your life to make it worth the worry?

MrsBadger · 16/02/2009 10:34

um, every morning at school when they take the register?

def worth considering IMO

SlartyBartFast · 16/02/2009 10:35

faith brown for example sounds fine.
and no surnames in register normally

Hero76 · 16/02/2009 10:39

Slarty I was thinking of school register plus I do a job where I constantly have to ring people up and tell them my name, which makes me slightly more funny about getting name and surname right I guess....but also wonder if that makes me hypersensitive IYSWIM?

DP and I have wildly different ideas on names which makes it even more difficult - so many already vetoed!

why did you decide against Zoe MrsB?

We have a one syllable surname and made sure that we chose first names which were at least 2 syllables, even when shortened.

On our list were

Barnaby
Charles/Charlie (the only exception to our rule)
William
Eloise
Emily
Imogen
Tabitha

MrsBadger · 16/02/2009 10:49

we didn't discard Zoe for any particular reason, it was on the shortlist right up till the birth
but it turned out one of the other shortlisted names seemed to suit her better (inasmuch as a small squashed pink potato can be said to 'suit' a name)

TigerFeet · 16/02/2009 10:52

I go by a single syllable name (it's a shortened version of my Sunday name but it's what everyone knows me as). Before I got married I also had a single syllable surname and tbh I always thought it grated a bit. I much prefer my two syllable married name, it seems to flow better with my single syllable first name.

It does depend on the names used though. Mine just sounded harsh and clipped but others, Faith Brown being a good example, sound fine.

Littlefish · 16/02/2009 10:57

Do you think it's to do with the length of the vowels in "Faith Brown"?

By that I mean, Faith has got a long "ay" and Brown has got a long "ow" sound.

Does it sound worse if you're called

Meg Dunn / Sam Tapp which both have short vowels in each name?

Hero76 · 16/02/2009 10:58

You're right. I am slightly concerned because I think our surname is quite harsh sounding (short vowel sound) but DP says I am being ridiculous!

I had just the same argument with DH

[rumamges for thread]

documented in its full MN glory here

Littlefish · 16/02/2009 11:05

Ours is a short vowel surname which is why we went for two/three syllable first names. Personally, I think the flow of a name is very important.

Hero76 · 16/02/2009 11:43

Littlefish yes i think if you have short vowels it sounds more disjointed.
Mrs B I have just been reading that thread! I can't remember who said it about Margaret - love the name and diminutives but don't think I can disassociate it from Thatcher!
Am v nervous as a first timer about giving my child a name that either everyone will have or one that sounds a bit rubbish
I like Helena too but DP not keen; also Gabriella but he basically spat coffee out and said 'never'....

I like Joseph and Alistair if DC turns out to be a boy. DP fine with Joseph, not so much so with Alistair. He is v keen on having some family reason or meaning of name being right....
