I love the name Atticus and would like to use it if we have a boy in May. However, I'd feel better knowing there are a few out there - anyone know any children named Atticus?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

just so long as you can ensure that everyone your ds meets throughout his life has read "To Kill a Mockingbird".....Otherwise you are setting him up for a life of "What did you say your name was?" "How do you spell that?" "That's am unusual name - where does it come from?" And so on - ad infinitum.

dh went to school with an Atticus. I'm sure I remember that he also had a brother called Icarus!

Clary · 17/02/2009 00:31

No, I don't know any and I know a lot of children (3 in school, etc etc).

I like it (like Scout too) but don't know if I woudl dare. Loved the book so so so much.

I met a Harper recently. Trying to think where now. She was about 6-7 I think.

Clary · 17/02/2009 00:35

btw if you do mind about this, I think it makes a difference where you live.

My sister lives in London (posh bit) and she knows children called Blue, Indiana, Ptolemy and a few other names which would raise an eyebrow elsewhere - for example in my middle-class suburban midlands neighbourhood, where every other boy is called Oliver and all the others are James, Daniel, and Edward.

(It's true; my footie team (8 lads) has 2 Dans, 2 James and an Oliver)

Nothing wrong with those names btw.

My children's granddad names seem outlandish here but prob common as muck in some parts.

I know someone with a son called Atticus (never met Atticus himself but he's about 7 I think).

I think it's a great name, go for it.

do think it's lovely the cat is named Atticus .

seeker, that's what I thought: maybe it's a cool name just for the people who've read the book.

but, i still really love the name and have not been able to think of another boy's name I hold in such high regard.

as for where we live - York - I'm not sure... I need to ask my school-teacher friends. Of course, if we do move to the US, i think Atticus would blend in more.

I felt that about Kier - loved it and its associations, but accepted the fact that the origins of the Labour Party are of limited interest to most people!

SoupDragon · 17/02/2009 08:18

I have a cat called Scout too, if that helps

SoupDragon · 17/02/2009 08:19

Have to say I felt a bit of a tw*t phoning the vet and asking after Atticus though. Not sure if this would be a problem with a child (not at the vets, obviously)

MrsMattie · 17/02/2009 08:24

lol!@seeker

I agree that Atticus would be great name for a cat. A big fat ginger tom called Atticus - cool.

Clary · 17/02/2009 13:08

Ahh seeker I knew you were a kindred spirit.
I too toyed with Kier (Keir surely?) and also Tony as in Tony Benn.

Settled for a name we actually liked as well as being meaningful in the end.

seeker · 17/02/2009 13:46

No idea where Kier came from !

Aneurin, anyone?!

Tillyscoutsmum · 17/02/2009 13:50

I love it but not sure I'd have the guts to use it as a first name. I'm pretty sure there's a mumsnetter who has an Atticus (she runs the book club funnily enough )

SoupDragon · 17/02/2009 15:33

My Atticus is a huge sleek tabby. Scout is a weeny fragile ginger kitty.

Flightattendant27 · 17/02/2009 15:44

Yes, a 3yo and a man in his early thirties - friends of friends.

seeker · 19/02/2009 21:28

My ds's current favourite book is called "I am Spartapuss"!

rempy · 19/02/2009 21:31

I know an Atticus. He lives in Australia though. He will be about 4.
