People names, or Adult names, or Man names or Woman names. Or KickAss lawyer names. Or Binman names. Or Teacher names. (oh god yes, teacher names."Miss Miss Miss - is your name REALLY TrixieBelle? REALLY, Miss?")

This might make people pause before they call their children names that only work for babies.

You seem unable to understand that it is all subjective. It's a very arrogant attitude.

dizzydixies · 04/02/2009 17:47

kayzr but at least you used it for the right sex

leave seeker alone people she's entitled to her opinion and like all other things on MN if you don't like it ignore it

dragonbutter · 04/02/2009 17:47

i think i know one of seekers kids names, and actually it's very nice. fairly traditional but not that common and nice.
i'm not in the business of posting other mumsnetters childrens names on the internet. so you'll just have to trust me on this one.

but i still disagree with her rules. for me.

seeker · 04/02/2009 17:54

My children are Grace and Patrick. Grace was the only one we knew when we named her - and she is still one of the few of her age so I do like unusual names. But notice I haven't spelled them Grase and Patrik!

I know Dizzy

I must say I did look like this when someone said that Freddie was posh and pretentious. I never would have thought that.

kayzr · 04/02/2009 17:56

Seeker They are great names. I love Patrick. DS2 was either going to be Dylan(which he is), Oliver or Patrick.

SobranieCocktail · 04/02/2009 17:57

Oh God every other girl I meet at the moment is called Grace! It's the Sharon of the noughties I reckon.

dragonbutter · 04/02/2009 17:59

yup, seeker they are nice names.

but they feel right for your family.
not for mine though.
i can't imagine being a mother to a grace, although possibly a patrick.

but it doesn't mean you are right and i am wrong. really it doesn't.

dragonbutter · 04/02/2009 18:02

isn't there an element of instinct in chosing names.
there are lots of lovely names that i like, but that wouldn't quite feel right for me and my family.

RoobeeToozdae · 04/02/2009 18:08

What's wrong with Grase or Patrik?

namehelp · 04/02/2009 18:26

lovely names, quite like Patrick.

dizzydixies · 04/02/2009 19:38

I loved Grace when pg with DD1 but she came out at 10lb4 so was never really going to be a Grace

seeker · 05/02/2009 10:50

namehelp - my Patrick is the only one we know at school or football club and socially - and we've never had the slightest negative reaction, it's got lots of pet names and shortenings - it's moderately easy to spell. Have it with my best wishes. My Patrick is a fab kid (although I say it myself!) so it's obviously a name with good vibes!

Ok seeker Patrick is on the list, along with octavio.

Seriously I do like Patrick. DH quite keen on it.

seeker · 05/02/2009 19:45

Don't tell anyone, but our Patrick is known as Patch in the family!

OP posts:
namehelp · 05/02/2009 21:43

OH I really like Patch! Far better than pat.
Your making a good case for Patrick.

I do think that general consensus amongst MNners on these threads often doesn't mirror real life opinions. But I like that, I live somewhere where there are VERY few names about that aren't in the top 20 so if I asked anyone around here an opinion on a more unusual name I'd no doubt be shot down and ordered to name my child Sophie (love Sophie BTW but it's v popular).

It's nice to get different opinions.
