Is Agatha hideous??!!

I love the name Agatha, it stirs up all sorts out fabulous Art Deco images for me and I imagine a daughter called Agatha to be all independence and intellect. However, every single person I've suggested this to has reacted either with a choked back giggle or a fingers down the throat look - is it my hormones? Is it truly hideous?!

Yes, sorry.

WorzselMummage · 02/02/2009 15:19

I love it

WowOoo · 02/02/2009 15:19

I think it's lovely.

rubyslippers · 02/02/2009 15:20

not so much hideous as harsh sounding IMO

Mamazon · 02/02/2009 15:22

i love the name Aggie.

DivamakesKimchi · 02/02/2009 15:32

i like agatha, shorten aggi when baby if wanted.

gloomysue · 02/02/2009 15:53

Its a beautiful name.

blowninonabreeze · 02/02/2009 15:54

I love it but DH thought it was hideous when we were deciding for DD2

GossipMonger · 02/02/2009 15:54

Just feel that they would have a lot to live up to if they called something like that

Bit like Edith Bowman or Vernon Kay - have to be uber cool and might not be able to pull it off

Not really keen myself.

BonsoirAnna · 02/02/2009 16:04

Yes, it's horrid.

Even worse in French (Agathe) though, and it's relatively common here.

mersmam · 02/02/2009 16:12

I like it and would have had it for dd2 but dh hates it! Like all names that are not common it is a matter of personal taste - go for it and I'm sure that your daughter will make it beautiful to everyone you know!
I like Agnes too.

MrsY · 02/02/2009 21:05

It's gorgeous - i know a 28 yr old Agatha, and a 4 yr old one, they are both lovely people.

Love it!

lou33 · 02/02/2009 21:11

i know a 10 yr old agatha, i like it, and it suits her and she is lovely

lou33 · 02/02/2009 21:13

i know a vernon too, dated him briefly but he is now my best mate

Blu · 02/02/2009 21:13

I like it...but wouldn't have done 10 years ago.
Nancy is my favourite old fashioned name now.

lou33 · 02/02/2009 21:16

i went to school with a nancy

NorktasticNinja · 02/02/2009 21:17

Love it!

One of my cats is called Agatha, 'tis a name I could never use for a child because the Dutch aren't very good at pronouncing the TH sound. Hence giving it to the cat

NorktasticNinja · 02/02/2009 21:19

Tabitha is great too...

lou33 · 02/02/2009 21:22

i have a niece called tabitha

dustbuster · 02/02/2009 21:24

And she could be Taggie for short, like Taggie O'Hara/Cambell-Black in Jilly Cooper's Rivals!

[Swoons at memory of Taggie-Rupert love affair]

Hulababy · 02/02/2009 21:26

I am not keen sorry

Pinkchampagne · 02/02/2009 21:27

Really not keen

Hassled · 02/02/2009 21:27

Bertie Wooster's Great Aunt Agatha was so ferocious that she ate broken glass for breakfast. I love the name but just can't get past that

Wankingguideauthor · 02/02/2009 21:30

I like it. Strong grownup name, not mimsy and girly like so many girls' names. Also like Agnes and Edith for same reason....

boccadellaverita · 02/02/2009 21:30

I love it. Many years ago, was walking through the Fitzwilliam Museum when a mum said to her son "Finbar, do hold Agatha's hand, there's a good boy". It was a delightful scene. Finbar and Agatha must be in their 20s now.
