I love the name, DH isn't sure, but just wondering how it was likely to be shortened?

A good name, or too pretentious?

Too pretentious but you might get away with it if people think you're just a big fan of Mr Bloom. It'll get shortened to Orly, I would think.

Ronaldinhio · 28/01/2009 18:16

honestly

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

that's what everyone will honestly think but not tell you

Bubbaluv · 28/01/2009 18:24

I love it, reminds me of Orlando the Marmalade Cat (children's story). I guess it depends where you live and your peer group as to whether it's too pretentious.
My friends would love it.

oxcat1 · 28/01/2009 18:24

Fair enough. Certainly worth knowing in advance!

I don't really see it as that odd, but I guess I am being quite pretentious as I love it from literature (Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf etc).

Hmmm.

Back to the drawing board!

Just googled the cat - he's so sweet!

it's awful - sorry

wheresthehamster · 28/01/2009 18:30

I had an uncle Orlando (he was italian) always known as Lando. Which I think is a nice name on it's own.

Sesi · 28/01/2009 18:32

Don't be put off! It's really nice. Is a literary name imo, and the Orlando Bloom connection is not too bad. Orly seems to be the nn which is nice too.

blametheparents · 28/01/2009 18:38

No

paolosgirl · 28/01/2009 18:41

It can also sound chav in the extreme - Orlando, Florida is not so good.

Boobz · 28/01/2009 19:24

I think it's fab, personally. Wouldn't have the balls to use it myself...

A friend of DH's is called Orlando - and he's pretty cool.

tengreenbottles · 28/01/2009 19:25

ooooo orlando the marmalade cat ,ive got that book in the bottem of my wardrobe from when i was little

Waxonwaxoffdanielsan · 28/01/2009 19:25

i like it.
and orlanda is even better for a girl.

Nancy66 · 28/01/2009 19:31

I like it but it it prob is a bit poncey

LaDiDaDi · 28/01/2009 21:56

I like it. I'd teamit with a plain vanilla middle name, then I think it would be cool.

Orlando Christopher
Orlando Michael
Orlando Luke
Orlando Peter

I know (vaguely) a mn whose dh is called Orlando.

sophiesmummie · 28/01/2009 22:01

I also like it - it sounds masculine and cool and is quite unique! Could be shortened to Orly or Ollie.

I'd certainly rather be called Orlando than Jack or Luke etc.

flimflammum · 28/01/2009 22:02

I like the sound of it, but yes it is poncey. And I'm not sure about saddling a child with the gender-changing connotations of the Virginia Woolf novel. Loved the film though...

seeker · 28/01/2009 22:04

you would, sophiesmummie - but I bet Orlando would give his eye teeth to be Jack!

FlowChart · 28/01/2009 22:08

If you really love the name, you should go for it, no matter what anyone else thinks. Just my opinion.

minouminou · 28/01/2009 22:08

I like it.
Which may or may not be a good thing.......

CioccolataCalda · 28/01/2009 22:14

Sorry - can't help but remember Mark Kermode and 'Olundo Bland'!

You could use it I suppose but really ....don't.

Hulababy · 28/01/2009 22:15

I am not keen sorry/

hester · 28/01/2009 22:15

I know two, both aged under three. Perhaps you're surfing the Next Big Thing?

LynetteScavo · 28/01/2009 22:17

I like it...I like the Marmaled Cat (but have never got to the end of those books,; they have so many words!)but people might think he was concieved on holiday....

dottoressa · 28/01/2009 22:18

I love it. It was on my list, but was vetoed by DH. I don't know who Orlando Bloom is, but wasn't there a Lando in The Empire Strikes Back? (Am going back many years there...)

Go for it on behalf of those of us with unimaginative DHs!
