This name is on our (though not overly excited about it) but why have i only seen it spelled this way and not 'Honour'?

Sorry, 'Honor is on our shortlist...'

It's a latinised spelling. Church records were in Latin until very recently and as a result Honor became the accepted spelling.

Momino · 23/01/2009 23:18

thanks, different.

Yes, it derives from the Latin given name Honora rather than the English word honour. I love Honor - gorgeous, simple and uncommon.

TheStatueOfLiffey · 24/01/2009 09:20

Yeah I wondered that. But Honor looks better anyway. I like it, don't love it.

I like Joy too. Nice to see other virtue names such as Honour and Joy used occassionally.

wombleprincess · 24/01/2009 09:22

my litlle one is honor. yes we have this question a lot. we have also had two engraved items with honour... but hey. lots and lots of compliments about it, which is nice!

MrsMattie · 24/01/2009 10:37

I know an Honour. I prefer it this way.

Momino · 24/01/2009 14:22

I've only seen it as 'Honor' (until this thread ) and actually do prefer the spelling 'Honour'.

Honor is correct afaik.

kerryk · 24/01/2009 15:23

i love honor, have only met one is real life who was in her thirties and know of honor blackman.

did a sleb not use this name recently though?

if so you must see loads of little honors running around soon!

Momino · 24/01/2009 15:29

there can't be an incorrect way to spell it. honour would just be the uncommon way to spell it (if we decided to name after the virtue instead of the the 'latin given name'...

if that makes any sense.

i don't really think we'll use it anyway so prob don't need to worry too much.

"if so you must see loads of little honors running around soon!"

My Honor is 23 now and until last summer hadn't met anyone with the same name.
Then on August Bank Holiday we met two toddling Honor's in the same weekend!
We've met several since, but they've all been pre schoolers.

Know two Honors. never met an Honour. Think Honor Blackman brill.

mutter · 02/12/2009 12:09

There's a girl called Honoria Glossop in PG Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster books and an Honor in Angela Brazil's 'New Girl at St Chads".
Both were written in the 1920s.

After I'd named my daughter, I discovered my grandad had aa aunt with the same name.

Vivia · 02/12/2009 21:47

The celeb who used this for her (incidentally, gorgeous) DD recently was Jessica Alba. Honor is the only spelling of the name. It's beautiful.

raspberrytart · 02/12/2009 21:48

Great name as long as your surname is not Hill!!!

Momino · 03/12/2009 11:03

ah, we didn't use Honor in the end... . still haven't met any though.
