Italian / International boys name

Italophil · 22/01/2009 14:41

I am looking for Italian boys names that work internationally and can be pronounced (also by myself!!!). DH is Italian. If I cannot find a name that works internationally, i will have to impose an international name on him (although likely to sound like a mafioso given Italian last name ).

What do you think of:
Leone
Tancredi (very Sicilian I know)
Niccolo'
Matteo

Alternative would be Maximilian.

Don't really like the usual "international-sounding" suspects such as Luca, Ludovico, Fabio, Dario, etc

Running out of ideas!! Thanks for your help!

Love Matteo and Leone........

beforesunrise · 22/01/2009 14:44

Leone, Tancredi and (to a lesser extend) Niccolo are all exceedingly posh, I really like Matteo, Maximilian very grand.

what's the name of your father in law?

sonniebonnie · 22/01/2009 14:45

I love Leone and Niccolo!!

Italophil · 22/01/2009 14:47

Father in law is called Michele. Actually very touchy point, as DH wants Michele. But problem is that often it is pronounced like girl (Michelle) in German, so i hate the idea a bit. Trying to tell him to use it as a middle name.

beforesunrise, how can Leone, Tancredi and Niccolo be posh??? They're not even English... and only here do people worry about poshness and chavviness!

Brangelina · 22/01/2009 14:49

Leonardo?

Don't really like any of the others except perhaps Matteo.

ThumbBurns · 22/01/2009 14:54

I like Matteo, Maximilian.
What about Frank? (Francesco, or Franco - although that has some negative connotations!)

Italophil · 22/01/2009 14:55

Like Leonardo, but DH hates it. Guess too much di Caprio.

Michele is a very nice name, though i understand about the pronounciation thing.

incidentally, i find your comment about the mafioso thing slightly offensive, i am sure you didn't it mean it that way, but it grates.

sonnie, i know it's hard to imagine, but there are posh people in italy too!

how about Federico, Damiano, Stefano, Marco, Francesco (please please NOT Frank!), Lorenzo

beforesunrise · 22/01/2009 15:02

Vittorio also a very nice and underused name

ThumbBurns · 22/01/2009 15:03

but, beforesunrise, if Germany is involved then Frank will be the way to go!

Tomas?

beforesunrise · 22/01/2009 15:05

i missed the bit about german sorry!

Italophil · 22/01/2009 15:05

beforesunrise: my apologies, it was not meant in an offensive way, just realistic given the recurrence of own last name in connection with it -- but not meant to insult anyone!

Like Lorenzo a lot. Agree with you, Frank definitely not (does not work in German at all). Federico is brother in law; Damiano no-go for DH; Stefano my brother; Marco does not work in German; dont like Francesco unfort.

how about Andreas? German version of Michele (if your DH is sicilian you will gain a LOT of brownie points for sticking with tradition and going with his father's name, even in a different version).

duchesse · 22/01/2009 15:14

Cosimo, Bruno, Luca?

LaTrucha · 22/01/2009 15:23

I think you might have problems with Leone. I know a couple of English, female Leones. I empathise with the problem though. My DH is Spanish.

ErnestTheBavarian · 22/01/2009 15:31

Really like Matteo.

How about Nico?
Tobias
Noah
Ellias
Stefan
Jonah

lastboxoftampons · 22/01/2009 15:33

I like Niccolo (nn Nico) and Matteo.

Some names from my family (even though you didn't ask ):

Armando
Francesco
Lucian
Alfonso

do you know for sure it's going to be a boy? Do you have names picked out for a girl?

thirtysomething · 22/01/2009 15:34

Leo? Teo?Paolo, Gianni, Gianfranco, Vicenzo, Vito, Antonio/nino, Daniele, Luciano, Tomaso, Domenico, the list is endless! Do you prefer more German or more italian? Got a friend with same issues and she had 2 DDs with names that were the same in English, German and Italian but much harder with boys!!

Italophil · 22/01/2009 15:46

Thanks a lot, i got lots to think about now!

Sileno?
Jacopo?

Bucharest · 22/01/2009 15:50

I only like Niccolo from your list which is refreshing as I live in a town where Nicola is the patron saint, so am surrounded by Nicola's!

The combo-names like Gianfranco, Gianluca, Pierluigi are the nouveau posh, apparently.

crumpet · 22/01/2009 15:52

Love Tancredi, but re poshness, the only one I ever met was a principe.

Lorenzo?
Cristoforo?

Brangelina · 22/01/2009 16:05

Dante?
Giacomo (although I could imagine that as being beyond many non Italians pronounciation wise)
Enrico?
Elia (was on my shortlist)
Achille?
Ennea?
Gabriele (v.popular atm)

Beforesunrise - Niccolò is no longer posh, I've heard it screeched across parks by many a "non posh" mother lately.

Brangelina · 22/01/2009 16:05

Emanuele Filiberto?
