Names for a girl - what do you think of...?

pluto · 21/01/2009 22:20

Have been snooping on Pgwithno3's thread. We too are stuck on names for a girl. Have picked out some of my favourites from her thread and added a couple that I've been thinking of. Middle name will definitely be Marie (it's a family thing) and I may put Claire in as well).

So - reactions to...(listed in no particular order)

Florence / Flora
Frieda
Juliet(te)
Nancy
Valerie
Christina
Ellen
Elsa

Wouldn't be averse to something a bit more Scandinavian as I'm half Swedish and DS has a Swedish name - but I have decided that's not going to be the primary focus of our quest for a name, although suggestions are welcome.

Think I'm narrowing it down to Ellen (nn Nell?), Juliet or Annika. But ask me tomorrow and it'll probably be something completely different. Just as well I'm ONLY 36 weeks pg!!

I know DH likes Ellen but he thinks Juliet is a bit prissy.

I've just remembered a bully at school called Nancy, and now I'm not sure it might be a bit corny with our surname. Oh dear.

And the problem with Elsa is the whole cat thing.

pluto why not have a few so you can see what suits her?

we've never managed to narrow it down to one name before any of our girls were born but always had some favourites to choose from

probably the reason all our girls have 2 middle names too

RIAchforthestars · 21/01/2009 23:04

Christa is nice

Fimbo · 21/01/2009 23:05

Florence is my favourite - very pretty yet smart and classic

pluto · 21/01/2009 23:09

I know this is good advice Dizzydixies - we could just wait until the baby arrives - it just feels weird to do this - I am a like to be prepared and ready sort of person

Of course we could getting a DS - and I've still got time to change my mind on the name we've sorted for him!

Hailsk get back to your own thread

pluto its such a huge decision its easy to feel pressurised into something you're not 100% happy with, even now I'm not sure I've done the right thing by my girls but at least I'll be able to tell them I agonised over them for weeks

Ellen!! .... every time ( I maybe a little biased as that was my grandma's name and I havent had the chance to use it, but she was very classy and so is the name.)

combustiblelemon · 21/01/2009 23:21

I like Florence, Juliet, Valerie and Christina.

How about:
Alice?
Erica?
Julia?
Viola?

pluto · 21/01/2009 23:31

I can't have Marie and Claire as middle names in that order can I? I might as well throw in Cosmo for good measure too then

We have a lovely girl called Siri at school whose mum is Swedish

samsaysohboy · 22/01/2009 00:19

how about selma? it's a bit like elsa. i also think vera is nice and a bit nordic.

and for some names that really do not work in english: Siren, Randi, Wenche, Gunn, all good scandinavian names..

goodasgold · 22/01/2009 00:28

The names are all lovely. Your little dd will take one and make it her own.
One of my friends gave her dd a name that I really didn't like, until I met her dd and now it's one of my favourite girls' names.
Have faith in your dd to make any name you give her beautiful.

RIAchforthestars · 22/01/2009 00:36

lovely post goodasgold

pluto · 22/01/2009 10:26

Thank you goodasgold - you are right I could sense people looking a bit sniffy when we announced DS's arrival and his nordic name - but it's absolutely right for him and whatever flavour this next baby turns out to be in a few weeks time I know the name connumdrum will unlock itself.

pluto couldn't agree more with goodasgolds lovely post, we gave our DD3 a name more commonly used for a boy and everyone was very but she is a wee cracker and it suits her right down to the ground

good luck with whatever you decide

Lotster · 22/01/2009 10:44

I like Elsa best.

Goodasgold - lovely post, makes me more confident about my Lo's chosen name!

BumblBeee · 22/01/2009 20:12

Violet Malone
Julianna Malone
Nell Malone
Christa Malone

like all of these

Nell Malone could be short for Annabell or Annalise or Nancy even

bangandthedirtisgone · 22/01/2009 20:15

Amalia? My swedish friend has a sister with that name.

BumblBeee · 22/01/2009 20:15

Eloise
Lois
Erin

more Ellen style names

BumblBeee · 22/01/2009 23:27

Josephine Malone (Josie is cute)

Frances Malone

MarchNowFebMum · 23/01/2009 06:35

Elena/Eleni?

pluto · 23/01/2009 11:09

I like Josephine and Eloise but I think I'm still most keen on Ellen with nn Nell. Anyway, I've just come back from a 36 week scan, and even though we didn't see anything to confirm our suspicions I am increasingly convinced we're having a boy! At 36 weeks it's already judged to be 8lbs 5oz - surely girls don't come in that sort of size?!

nappyaddict · 19/02/2009 22:58

I like all of them.
