Jack or Joaquim

I like both. I really Joaquim, but I am not sure if it's a good idea as DS would have to spend his life spelling his name... Jack is nice, but I don't want him to be one of 10 Jacks in his class...

Isn't the J sound Portugeuse? So Jo-a-keem could be 'right' too.

Think it depends where you live tbh regarding 'English playground'. Dh and I teach in Hackney/Tottenham/Enfield and we have never heard a child take the piss out of somebody's name. Names from all over the globe and therefore pretty tolerant (name-wise, I mean, obviously you might get the piss ripped for something else...

Mind you, personally I like Jackson and Joachim (Jo-a-keem). The q makes it a bit complicated for me.

ninedragons but it's not pronounced "quim" it's "keen"

I prefer Joaquin to Joaquim.

My dad's great uncle was Joaquin and when he moved to America (from Spain) they always called him Jack, so you could use Jack as a nickname.

PuppyMonkey · 21/01/2009 10:34

Neither

I know a Joachim (Jo-a-kim), I really really like the name - he's usually called Jo

Do you really think your average 13-year-old bully will give a toss how it's pronounced?

I just don't see the point of making things any easier for bullies.

moonincancer · 21/01/2009 11:18

quim...no way

Cies · 21/01/2009 11:24

It is a very foreign name - I'd think Spanish because I live in Spain, but obviously it's also common in Germany etc.

The J sound in Spanish is quite hard for English speakers to pronounce, so it may not be a good idea.

lastboxoftampons · 21/01/2009 11:29

ninedragons I don't think the average 13 year old will know how it's spelt. I don't see the point in naming your child something because of how other people might react.

I think in the long term you son will be much happier with a unique, cool name than to be yet another Jack.

sleepyhead3 · 21/01/2009 13:45

I really like just jack!

Ireguina · 21/01/2009 18:50

Joaquim is DH's favourite name. I am Spanish, but DH is not (very English surname too!). Maybe we will go for Jack in English passport/English environment an Joaquim in Spanish passport/environment/

I really like it. Def. go with Joaquim. If this baby was going to be a boy I was leaning towards Joaquin myself, so maybe I'm biased.
