Don't know if this is too out there.
What do you think?
Do you like it? Did you know if it was a girl's or boy's name? Can you pronounce it.

Thanks

Would assume girl.
Would pronounce as halcyon but think it's a bonkers name and wouldn't do it.

On looking it up I see that it is a Latinized version of a mythical Greek name, and for a girl. I would have a stab at pronouncing it Hal-k-"ee"-on. I like unusual names, but not this one. It is very obscure!

It's the name of a sleeping tablet.

I don't think it's that bad and I believe it's pronounced hal-see-un with the emphasis on the hal part. I might be wrong however and it might be pronounced hal-sigh-un.

There was a shop in London called "Halcyon(e?) Days" selling trinkets and nick nacks (perfumed candles in tins etc). I think Princess Diana was a customer.

I think your child will however be having to explain the spelling of her name throughout her life.

I'm not sure about spelling it with an e on the end unless you want it to be pronounced halcy-wun or halcyohne.

Definition.

It's a pretty sound and a nice name, if a little grandiose.

flummery · 19/01/2009 04:15

Halcyon means calm, happy, prosperous etc. It's also the name of star in the Taurus constellation and is derived from Greek. It's pronounced hal see un with the hal being the longest syllable and the final two syllables running into each other.

Halcion is a sleeping tablet with the same pronounciation.

I think that pronunciation is also not terribly attractive, and would result in the child always having to explain how to spell and pronounce their name. Which in itself is not a huge deal (I have to do this myself), but unless there is some particular reason why you are choosing the name (a good back story to tell) I wouldn't.

flummery · 19/01/2009 04:55

I also think the most likely nickname would be Hal.

Where did you hear it?

Because it's one of the names I chose a while ago to start a thread on here about why people chose completely off the wall names for their children. I chose it because it didn't cross my mind anyone would actually USE it!

Please don't.
