Hi all,

Lots of strong opinions on this board! Anyway, I decided to start a guaranteed non-offensive thread (well, hopefully anyway!) as this is a hypothetical situation but I promise I will take all suggestions seriously and file it all away for future use as and when it happens. It would also be a test of how good you all name experts are! DH and I are thinking of TTC-ing number 2 very soon. Don't care if it is a boy or girl. DS is Aidan. Our surname starts with R and end with 'ley'. So no names with the same end sound. For example, if DS had been a girl, our favourite girl name would have been Iris but it wouldn't have worked with the surname. Our son could have been an 'Oliver' but we didn't want a name that ended with a letter that the surname started with and the short form of Oliver 'Ollie' wouldn't have sounded good with our surname...

So what name(s) would you suggest for our next DS/DD? We like 'proper' traditional names (no made-up names) that aren't too popular (Aidan is in top 100 but bottom 50). Love names that end with the 'ah' sound like Aidan as it sounds good with our surname. I really love Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner's new baby name - Seraphina. Also love Sophia (but probably too popular for us now).

I like Tilly as a nn to Matilda - but does that fit your requiremens. Else you could use Tilda. I don't like Matty

Hmmmm... Really don't like Tilda (reminds me of actress Tilda Swanton and she's such a 'cold' character!). Tilly is sweet. Might have to rethink the surname! LOL...

Love Madeleine but the short form Maddy is a problem with the surname. I like Cameron too but I would use it with a girl but I guess the short form is Cammy?!!! I can't win.

I like Lucas, considered for DS but DH said it was too 'Italian'!

DH liked Lewis but it wouldn't work with our surname and it's the number 1 boy's name in Scotland!

I love Tristan (my fave boy's name at the moment!) after I watched Stardust but worry it may be too poncey!

The funny thing is you all came up with some fantastic names that would work well with our surname but I would never consider just because I knew someone with the name who was an idiot/twat/vain/silly etc. It's amazing how things like that stick with you and you dismiss a perfectly good name because of that... For example, DH's ex before me was Hannah and I wouldn't use that name for that reason though it's pretty.

Thanks all. Great list actually. Would be interested to see if anymore comes along! I also considered Atticus for DS but DH thought that was too 'way out'.
