So, My not-yet-conceived baby girl was to be called some variation of Rose or Grace, but they seem to be waaaay more popular than I thought, and I dont want her to be the third Grace in her class, so what other similar style names are out there?

I always thought Rosamund meant "horse-lover" or something like that??

LK, the only Hope I've ever met was indeed a very premature baby.

BlueChampagne · 29/04/2009 12:53

Philippa is horse-lover

spenthen · 29/04/2009 14:03

Here we are - Rosamund, possibly from Old German "hros" (horse) and "munt" (protection), therefore = horse-protector.

But then it might be from Latin and mean rose of the world. But what actually is a rose of the world???

RachieB · 30/04/2009 12:27

I know of 2 Hope's age 7 and age 3
neither were premmies

flooziesusie · 30/04/2009 13:41

I don't think either names are over popular, and even if you did choose a name not percived as 'over' popular you can't guarantee not having another child with the same name in the class... imo. Chose a name you love. The end.

seeker · 30/04/2009 13:46

Even the most popular names aren't THAT popular, if you see what I mean - there are a lot of children in the country! My ds is in a primary school with 400 children in it and there aren't any Graces. My dd is in a secondary school of 1400 girls and only 3 Graces (2 in one form, by sod's law!)

I would choose a name you like and not worry about where it is in the top 100! You could call her Thannington and discover that there are 3 others in her class.

Actually, not Thannington, that sounds like a boy. Lynsted, perhaps.

mooseloose · 30/04/2009 13:56

I don't know any 'rose' but what about Rosie, I have a lovely friend called that.
Also Violet is sweet.

RoseOfTheOrient · 30/04/2009 13:59

Oi! what's wrong wiv Rose?? Tis a GORGEOUS name

spenthen · 30/04/2009 14:22

Oh I like Thannington. Thanny for short??

seeker · 30/04/2009 14:31

Or just Than?

dizzydixies · 30/04/2009 14:51

Luella

sophieandbelly · 30/04/2009 18:19

hi , i also dont think rose is that poular for first name.

my daughter is evie grace,

which of course i love altho we hadnt thought of grace as a middle name was a suggestion frm the midwife that deliverd her!

i like honor, faith, rosie, poppy (sort of along those lines!)

mustsleep · 30/04/2009 18:40

I absolutely love both of those names but if you feel they are too popular how about

Poppy (biased dd's name)
Eve
Rebecca

twinmum79 · 18/05/2009 17:45

Ah, I feel like I have to post here. My twins girls are Rosetta Grace and Matilda Joy. We shorten Rosetta to Rosa, but Matilda is just Matilda (she suits it so well!).

boodleboot · 18/05/2009 18:39

i've got it.....Eloise.....lovely

MrsMattie · 18/05/2009 21:29

Both beautiful names. I do know many, many Graces, but I only know one Rose and she is an adult.

Rosa is lovely.

Rosetta is fabulous@twinmum - haven't heard it before.

Other flower names?

Violet
Daisy
Jasmine
Lily
Lilac
Cammelia
Blossom

lynniep · 19/05/2009 17:24

I've posted this elsewhere, but I also love Joy. Thing is DS is called Joey, so it just wouldnt work
Matilda is my first choice, if DC is a girl.
DH likes Daisy, but I'm not convinced.
I think Grace is beautiful, but seems v. popular round these parts, as is Evie.

McBoo5 · 16/01/2021 17:37

Thoughts on the girls name Luella please?

motleymop · 16/01/2021 19:19

@McBoo5

Thoughts on the girls name Luella please?
I think I like it. I might put it on my list.
motleymop · 16/01/2021 19:20

Oops - just noticed this is a really old thread

partyatthepalace · 16/01/2021 22:25

I think Rose is more popular as a middle name. However.. Rosa, Rosanna, Rosalind, Rosemary, Rosemund, Rosaria (I think Rosalie/Rosalia are too twee and Rosaleen a bit kitchen sink but they are there)

Gracia is a Latin form of Grace or other virtue names - Hope, Faith, Constance.

Jasmine and Iris are nice and not hugely overused flower names. Serena is a lovely sort of virtue name. Also Honor.

Pudding01 · 16/01/2021 23:14

See, I just love Rose and hardly ever see it as a first name any more!

Pudding01 · 16/01/2021 23:15

Oh bloody hell, 2009?! 😂 who scrolled that far back!
