What do you think of Freddie? Do you like it or not?

DH and I have half agreed on Freddie Joseph for a boy.
DS1 is George Edward.
I'm probably only 80% sure that I like Freddie enough, but we can't agree on another name.

our cheery little man...

seeker · 14/01/2009 12:11

But PLEASE name him Frederick and call him Freddie from the beginning. It gives him more options.

ForeverOptimistic · 14/01/2009 12:13

I don't think it is posh. It is very common (used a lot not chav!), when ds was a baby there were 6 in his baby music class . I do like it though, I think Freddie is good for a sweet toddler and Fred for a cool teenager.

kayzr · 14/01/2009 12:42

Freddie isn't really a nickname anymore, I think Frederick is horrible.

princessmel · 14/01/2009 12:45

I like it

leakyR · 14/01/2009 21:02

Frederick is a definite no-no. Freddie and Fred are definitely growing on me.

Don't know the sex of baby so having a girl would simplify things - we both like the girls names we've chosen.

Freddie is lovely and goes well with George (which I love too).
Passes the supermarket test imo
Go for it!

MrsSeanBean · 14/01/2009 22:36

Yep love Freddie!

surprisenumber3 · 15/01/2009 16:58

DS1 is Joseph so obviously I love that!

DS2 is not called Freddie but for some reason DH has always called him that!!

LiffeyKidman · 15/01/2009 17:02

I love it. This was my short list for my son.

Frederick, Richard, Patrick, Dominic, Marcus, Leo....

claireybrations · 15/01/2009 17:19

I know someone who has boys with those exact names

I like Freddie but I know 3 of them so I wouldn't use it myself

ShauntheSheep · 15/01/2009 17:26

Think Freddie is grand for a little boy but not for a grown man. Fred is a more grown up name.

leakyR · 15/01/2009 20:31

Neither dh nor I have come across another Fred or Freddie in friends or acquaintances. It perhaps isn't as well used up here in the North-West.

It's definitely growing on me

Hi all, fairly new to mumsnet, usually just read/lurk, but have to comment on this one! DS1 (now 15) is Frederick but we call him Fred, and DS3 (4) is Joseph and love both. Love George Edward too. Good luck.

BouncingTurtle · 16/01/2009 11:37

Freddie is good, I have a friend who has a Freddie - but it is Frederick on his birth certificate, and IMO that's what you should have. Freddie is a diminutive not a proper name.
I think you need to think how a name suits a child and an adult.

ilovespinach · 16/01/2009 11:41

I like it - if I were to have another ds I would call him Freddie - although I would probably go for Frederic on the birth certificate and then call him Freddie.

leakyR · 16/01/2009 14:14

I get where you're all coming from on the whole "Freddie is not a grown ups name" thing. Really don't like Frederick - not sure I'd be comfortable giving my child a name that I hate, so it looks right on his birth certificate.

It's either Fred on the birth cerificate or back to the drawing board.

love it

poppydaisy · 16/01/2009 14:30

Definately Frederick on the birth certificate imo - lovely classic name!

Freddie or Fred are nicknames and and not proper names in my opinion. Also, Frederick gives your ds more options in life - let him choose whether he prefers to be called Fred, Freddie or Frederick!

claireybrations · 16/01/2009 17:17

Leaky we had the same dilemma, dd called my bump Douggie, we didn't have a boys name and Douggie kind of grew on us but we didn't like Douglas or Dougal. We went for just Douggie on his birth certificate but under pressure made it so his "middle" name came first on the birth certificate to give him options of using a 'proper' name later on in life.

TBH I used to think the way of "it's not a proper name so don't put it on the birth cert" but now I just think well if it is what he is called then it is a name!

sonniebonnie · 16/01/2009 18:25

claireybrations, how can the middle name come first on a bc?? Or did you choose a different first name?

SoMuchToBits · 16/01/2009 18:28

Definitely Frederick or Alfred on birth certificate (even if you never call him by it). I think Freddie for a little boy is OK, (but a bit cute for an adult) and Fred is great for any age.

claireybrations · 16/01/2009 19:19

No it is the name that would have been his middle name if we'd put Douggie as his first name. I said we put his "middle" name first as it was never intended that he would be called by that name, he was always going to be known as Douggie. Really we call him by his middle name (is that any clearer?!?)

claireybrations · 16/01/2009 19:26

God reading that back it makes no sense at all!

OK

We decided that if we had a boy his middle name would be Alexander (family name)but didn't like it enough to call him Alexander as his first name.

We were undecided about a first name, then dd started calling my bump Douggie.

It grew on us so we were going to use Douggie Alexander as his name BUT then certain family members gave us grief about using Douggie and not Douglas -you can't just call him Douggie, it's not a proper name etc etc

So we put Alexander as his first name and kept Douggie as his middle name as at least then he has the option to call himself Alexander later on in life.

But he is known as Douggie never as Alexander so really his name is Douggie, Alexander is just his official first name but we think of it as his middle name.

Clear as mud

sonniebonnie · 16/01/2009 19:47

That makes complete sense, clairey and gives your ds more options later on. Nice names too!
