I love Ruben - that's our first choice for a boy . It was my grandfather's name, so it has good associations for me. Also I think it could be shortened to Ben quite nicely (if you or your child fancy the option of a shortened form), which is also a name I really like.

Don't like Stanley at all - sorry.

Lionstar · 07/01/2009 13:18

I prefer Reuben (spelt that way too)

Bertolli · 07/01/2009 13:20

Yes i agree i prefer Ruben. I like it spelt Reuben too

preggersplayspop · 07/01/2009 13:21

Prefer Stanley shortened to Stan.

Don't get Reuben/Ruben at all.

JodieO · 07/01/2009 13:24

I prefer Stanley, not keen on Ruben at all.

CantSleepWontSleep · 07/01/2009 13:25

I like Reuben with this more usual spelling.

mumtostan · 07/01/2009 13:27

We have a Stanley and love the name!

I was initially worried about what people's reactions would be (we live in an area where conservative names dominate) but was determined to choose a name which we both loved and which gave him a good chance of not having his surname permanently attached at school.

When he was new and people would ask his name, I would often be greeted with silence and a change of subject which used to really upset me. However, more people would go, "Aw! How cute!" It certainly suits our wee Stan the man!

IMO Ruben doesn't come close second!

LaDiDaDi · 07/01/2009 13:32

I really like Stanley actually.

I think that Stan is a cool nickname for a teenager and I think it's less popular than Ruben if that bothers you at all.

I find the pronounciation of Reuben/Ruben/Rueben so un-intuitive... and I don't think the name 'travels' well into other languages. Neither of these issues may matter to you, of course.

nowwearefour · 07/01/2009 15:32

I think Reuben is a great name but would prefer the more common spelling otherwise might be a bit of a pain for the little boy

NorktasticNinja · 07/01/2009 15:38

I definitely prefer Stanley to Ruben/Reuben.

Love Rafael/Raphael though

yellowflowers · 07/01/2009 16:02

Both are fab - I know a little oy called Stanley and the name works perfectly. And Reuben on our shortlist (not that I am pregnant) - great name as we are Jewish so works that way and can be shortened to Ben too.

dinkymum · 07/01/2009 17:49

I really really like ruben

BabyBaby123 · 07/01/2009 18:21

Ruben of the two - but prefer spelt Reuben

Nancy66 · 07/01/2009 18:35

Stanley/Stan definitely. Too many Reubens

Smilewearingthin · 07/01/2009 19:51

Stanley, definitely. Very cool. We have a little boy next door called Stanley/Stan and he's gorgeous. Definitely a name I'd consider.

janeite · 07/01/2009 20:06

Reuben (with the E): don't like Stanley.

SAEJ · 07/01/2009 20:41

Don't like Ruben or Reuben. Think Stanley is very sweet.

Alishanty · 08/01/2009 15:38

We chose Reuben as the middle name for our ds. Was going to go for stanley as it's my grandad's name but then his intials would have been S.S. Don't know if that matters. Sort of wish we had stuck with Stanley really.

littlelyn · 08/01/2009 15:42

Definitely Stanley - wonderful strong and traditional name. Don't get Ruben or Reuben at all - unless of jewish origin.

campion · 08/01/2009 16:11

Why would Jewish origins matter? Hannah, Rebecca, Ruth, Samuel, Deborah, Jacob, Noah,Sarah,Joseph, Benjamin, David,Daniel,Aaron,Nathaniel,Jonathan are all simlarly ' Jewish' -ie Old Testament- names.
The only 2 Reubens I've known personally weren't Jewish, so it's by no means an exclusive name.
