Anglo-Welsh boy's names

DH is Welsh & we have a (fairly boring) Welsh surname. We live in England but would both like to give DS2 a Welsh name. DS1 is Ellis Osian.

I like Aneirin, Morgan and Ianto. DH likes Taryn (or Taran) or Vaughan (or Von).

We both quite like all these names but what I really want to know is which you think are most appropriate to a child growing up in England?

I like Aneirin but can imagine having problems in England with it. Of your choices, I suspect Morgan and Vaughan woudl work best.

sunshine75 · 01/01/2009 19:24

Oooh yes, tinker. Shortened to Nye. Just like my hero - Nye Bevan

Tinker · 01/01/2009 19:26

Yes, good thinking. Nye c/would work

ClarissimoUsedToBePeachy · 01/01/2009 19:29

I like Nye / Aneurin also, Ianto will be known due to Torchwood (was on our list but the actor who plays Ianto lives nearby apparently and I didnt want anyone thinking anything of it), loads of Morgan / Lewis / Evan at school and those would also be fine in England (if I can spell or say its fine, I only moved from Somerset 3 years ago LOL)

Aneirin sounds a bit medical to me, like aneurism or aspirin.

I like all the others, I used to know a doddery old man called Vaughan so it makes me laugh to think of a baby with the name.

Taryn and Morgan are both great names, and probably the most 'appropriate' for a child growing up in England, but what's wrong with a bit of cultural heritage!?

bronze · 01/01/2009 19:46

Iantos good. People have heard it since torchwood

apuppydaviesisforlife · 01/01/2009 19:47

gruffydd is easy enough (was also going to suggest ellis )

iolo will be tricky if pronunciation bothers you - it's hard for english people to get the short -o ime and iolo has 2!

apuppydaviesisforlife · 01/01/2009 19:56

but it's lovely [fpout]

laumiere · 01/01/2009 20:37

My Welsh DH ruled out Ianto as it's apparently the name used in jokes about stupid people in Wales (a bit like the 'Paddy' jokes about Irish people).

beanieb · 01/01/2009 20:39

I like Aneirin, and the shortened Nye is lovely.

llareggub · 01/01/2009 20:42

I love Aneirin. Have you considered Iestyn?

edam · 01/01/2009 20:47

Love Aneirin/Nye. I think people in England may regard Morgan as a girl's name.

Wish I'd been brave enough to go with Taliesin. Although ds does suit his name, I still have a hankering...

PixieMoon · 01/01/2009 20:57

Taryn and Vaughan are both lovely, Aneirin/Nye I'm not sure on, Morgan is great but unisex (if that bothers you), Ianto I like as a name but put off by Torchwood. Other 'I' names cross the severn estuary now I think, like Iolo, Ioan, Iestyn (love Iestyn).

Out of all of them I'd pick Vaughan, and think it goes nice with Ellis too

Your DS1 name is gorgeous!!

thisisyesterday · 01/01/2009 23:13

i love Taryn, had it on ,my list for ds2, but people kept telling me it was a girl's name. hmm

i do like Aneurin too though

Madoc as in Prince Madoc?

ClarissimoUsedToBePeachy · 02/01/2009 10:59

There's also Cadoc (as per the Saint)- easy to say / spell and I think rather nice. I'd have possibly usd only St Cadoc's Church 30 seconds away LOL, would seem odd.
