How would you pronounce Thalia? I would say 'tah-lia' but have heard some people pronounce the 'th' like 'thumb'. is there a right/wrong?

Like you - with a hard t, not th.

bouquet · 21/12/2008 14:29

I have heard it as

Thar-lee-ya

Tar-lee-ya

Thay-lee-ya

and

Tay-lee-ya

Think I would go with Tar-lee-ya but get cross when everyone said it and spelt it wrong.

And I have known it as a shortening for

Natalia so it is then Talia but might get said Tay-lee-a

it is a minefield of a name!!!!!

WorzselMincepieYummage · 21/12/2008 14:30

I would have thought it was Tha not Tah.

Isnt Talia a name too ?

ggirlsbells · 21/12/2008 14:32

I would say Talia

sorkycake · 21/12/2008 14:33

It's Tar-lee-a

HeadFairy · 21/12/2008 14:36

According to the BBC pronunciation website.... it can be Tah-lia as you say, Tharlia (soft th) or tha-liar (emphasis on the second syllable)

so no help really!

I guess it's up to you how you prefer it to be pronounced.

merrykittymas · 21/12/2008 14:37

I have a Talia pronounced Tah-lee-ah

It can be spelt Talia or Tahlia which I believe is the Hebrew version or Thalia which is the Greek version, I thought the H was silent in this version

We went with Talia as thought it would be the easiest to say and spell.

Some family memebers call her Tal-yar which annoys me.

sonniboo · 21/12/2008 14:56

Thalia is Tha-lia

and

Talia is Ta-lia

imo

SniffyHock · 21/12/2008 14:59

I love the name Talia but can't get over the pronunciation - is it 2 syllables Tal-ya or 3 - Ta-lee-a?

Momino · 21/12/2008 15:06

thanks all.
my friend named her dd Thalia and before I spoke to her, I wanted to check if there were a correct way to say it. looking at these different posts, I guess i'll have to ask her directly.

personally, i prefer 'tah leeya'. pretty name, anyway.

But you would Theo, Thatcher, Thanks, Thorn, etc etc etc.... there is no logical rule that can be applied, I think.

PlonkerTeatowelOnTheirHeads · 21/12/2008 15:45

I would pn it Tah-lee-ah

Heated · 21/12/2008 15:50

can I ask how you would pn Amalia?

PlonkerTeatowelOnTheirHeads · 21/12/2008 15:52

I would pn it Am-ah-lee-ah.

Have no idea if that's right though because I haven't heard the name before ...

littlemissm · 21/12/2008 16:39

My daughter is called Tahlia which is Hebrew for Morning Dew. You pronounce it Tah-lia The spelling Talia is usually pronounced Ta -lia(this is y i didnt go 4 this spelling hate the name Talia) Thalia i would find people would use the TH sound this is why i went with the Tahlia Spelling.

funkydude · 21/12/2008 16:47

We have a Natalia nn Talia - we pronounce it Tah-lee-ah. We love it! I'd pronounce Tahlia and Thalia in the same way.

chilledmincepiemama · 21/12/2008 16:57

Surely a no brainer...Taa-Lia.

I'm planning on Niamh for DC2 so have same mine field ahead!!!

paolosgirl · 21/12/2008 17:10

No-one will know how to pronounce it, so it's a bit of a moot point! If you have a preference for the way you would like it pronounced, then Thalia should expect to spend the next 80 years correcting people.

Or there's always the flip side of that - a Siobhan I knew insisted that her name be pronounced SHOW-bin.

merrykittymas · 21/12/2008 17:19

I would agree Talia, Thalia and Tahlia pronounced all the same way Tah-lee-ah

More common in the US Talia Shire (Mrs Rocky)

We have had loads of comments about how unusual and pretty it is and it suits DD2 to a T.

Majeika · 23/12/2008 13:48

ChilledMincePieMama

There is a Niamh at school where I work but pronounced Ny-AMM........sad but true......

Momino · 23/12/2008 14:23

obviously looking at this thread it's not as straightforward a name as one would think. I was sure it was only 'tah-lia' until I'd heard another mum pronounce the 'th' prompting this thread.

i do think it's a beautiful name (pr 'tah lia)but won't use now since friend has used it. Also, dd1 and 2 have names ending in '-ia' so need to break out of that mould if we have a 3rd girl in may.

BucketsofReindeerPoo · 23/12/2008 15:55

Tah-lia like the French.

tryingtoleave · 24/12/2008 08:37

In Autumn Term, by Antonia Forest, one of the girls is called Thalia and everyone mishears the name and thinks she is called "Failure", so I presumed the name was more like thay -lee- ah
