Struggling to find a boys name ... what does anyone think of Hugh? For some reason, my mother feels it is 'very aristocratic', and we're not!

I like Hugh (or Huw) but not Hugo. That's a step too far.

artichokes · 16/12/2008 15:10

I think "Hugh" is a really dull sound. Maybe that is because every Hugh/Huw I have ever met has happened to be very boring!

migolapland · 16/12/2008 18:40

it's funny isn't it, the poshness of a name really depends on where you come from. In wales Hugh (or Huw) is SO not posh! It's just a normal name like Dave

stuffmyturkey · 16/12/2008 18:46

he will very probably be called Huge at school

HughJars · 17/12/2008 14:09

nothing wrong with the name "Hugh".

bluebump · 17/12/2008 15:30

I like it, I wanted a Hugo but DP said it was too posh

PuppyMonkeyNuts · 17/12/2008 15:39

No

controlfreakyhohohohohohoho · 17/12/2008 15:40

well, it's better than hugo.... but that's not saying a lot imo!

SatsumaMoon · 17/12/2008 16:34

Hugh is a "normal" name in ireland too...

lastboxoftampons · 17/12/2008 16:38

I'm not a Hugh-ge fan (sorry, had to! har har! ) But it does seem to be the name of more than one yummy hot man (Hugh Jackman being the one that comes immediately to mind! ) - so maybe it's a got good karma or something

moonincancer · 17/12/2008 22:56

its ok as long as last name is not Jarce...

I have a Hugo tis very cute (as is he

My God son is Hugh i like that too.

Poinsetta my Dad is a Scot and calls him Shug

Cies · 18/12/2008 11:49

I'm not sure. It still has rather a "hooray Henry" aura about it.

CuppaTeaJanice · 18/12/2008 12:47

You realise if you have a Hugo you'll have to dress him in Boden and drive him around in a Range Rover!!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 18/12/2008 12:58

Yes, Huw the more common spelling in Wales and often pronounced more like "who" rather than "whew" if that makes sense.

Definately not posh round here!

I like it - wanted it for our DS but as my DH pointed out 'Hugh Johnson' sounded far too like Huge Johnson and therefore we might be setting him up for a life of expectation!!!

In short I think it depends a bit on your surname.

2pt4WiseMen · 18/12/2008 19:10

Is your surname Janus?

NotBigJustBolshy · 18/12/2008 19:12

As long as your surname isn't Cumber...

Smilewearingthin · 18/12/2008 19:59

The pronunciation seems to be the issue in a lot of ways. And our surname does begin with a J and so we'd have the 'huge' thing going. Good point about it being hard to pronounce for children, too. Hmm ... looks like it's back to the drawing board. Or the baby name books!

Oooh, if you're in Wales and go for Huw, he could become Doctor Huw...

WorzselMincepieYummage · 19/12/2008 16:49

My Labrador's called Hugo but we wish we'd not used to for our Dog now we're expecting a Boy and have realised quite how cool a name it is

We should have called the Dog Max or something.
