Edmund?

DH and I both like the name Edmund, however

My best friend laughed and actually geniunely thought I was joking when I said so (apparently it is the Blackadder link that made her think I was taking the pee) - this is from a friend who said when she was naming her DD it really annoyed her when people had very negative reactions to anything she suggested, so she genuinely did think I was joking!

My mum has openly said she doesn't like it, which I think must mean she hates it as I would usually expect her to keep her mouth shut or at least be half diplomatic.

DH's work mates all laughed and said that he would get bullied in the playground, but didn't specify why.

So are we missing something?? I think it's a perfectly normal, lovely name, and a bit more unusual than Edward? Is it considered super-posh or something? Or is it the Blackadder link (I love Blackadder)??

And I also mentioned to my Dad that we may shorten it to Ted and he said "Meh, Ted is short for Edward, not Edmund" - but I don't see why not?

My brother is Edmund and he likes it. Never a trace of bullying (and in fact his name is even sillier than that but I can't say why).

Tommy · 12/12/2008 17:31

I like it and considered if for DS3. DH was a bit about the Blackadder thing but it was on 25 years ago so I'm sure that people will not remember that for ever.

I also liked Edwin

janeite · 12/12/2008 17:35

I like it. I didn't think of Blackadder, I thought of "Mansfield Park" and Narnia.

alarkaspree · 12/12/2008 17:36

I like Edmund too. Once it's attached to an actual person people will get used to it and stop being rude about it. Ime it's very hard to find a name both parents like so if you worry about other people as well it gets nigh on impossible.

MrsMattie · 12/12/2008 17:36

Revolting. I think of the miserable one from Narnia books.

maretta · 12/12/2008 17:40

I think there was an Edmund thread a couple of weeks ago.

HarktheheraldAnglepoise · 12/12/2008 17:40

I think it's posher than Edward but I like it. Prefer Edward though I think.

mrsgboring · 12/12/2008 17:43

Yes, it was my thread. And no, you can't call your DS Edmund it's MIIIIIIIIINE I tell you!

I like it lots and it has been growing on me.

MrsM Edmund is positively gorgeous by the time of Dawn Treader

noonki · 12/12/2008 17:46

imo it is very pretenious. sorry.

CatchaChristmasStar · 12/12/2008 17:48

I like it although it's not normally a name I would.

Sesi · 12/12/2008 18:55

I love this name. It's in my top 3. I think it's cooler and less overused than Edward.

piscesmoon · 12/12/2008 19:01

I like it.

eekareindeer · 12/12/2008 19:12

Love it. Don't shorten it to Ted. Let him be proudly Edmund.

nkf · 12/12/2008 19:15

"There is nobleness in the name of Edmund..." Listen to Jane Austen. She knows about names.

LaundryFairy · 12/12/2008 19:25

I like it - and it could also be shortened to Ned.

TheFallenMadonna · 12/12/2008 19:33

I love it.

nooka · 12/12/2008 19:40

I like Edmund. I think we should use Old English names more (I have one at home ) I have an uncle Edmund, and a cousin Edwin. Both great names, and I little more unusual than Edward, although I like that too. The only association I have is with Narnia, and I think he is one of the more interesting characters there. btw it really is a bad Idea to tell anyone in RL (or on MN generally) the names you are thinking of. Fait acomplis is always better. I don't think the Blackadder link is a problem, because in our generation it will get a wry smile at most, and in your childs generation it will be irrelevant.

Gemzooks · 12/12/2008 21:17

I think it's lovely, very calm, noble, classical..

PenelopePitstops · 12/12/2008 21:20

i love this name, really really love it. Its so beautiful!

and shortened to teddy!

random · 12/12/2008 21:22

Its dreadful ..sorry

ravenAK · 12/12/2008 21:25

I have an Edmund. Love it.

(He doesn't like the Edmund in TLTW&TW being a 'baddie', though.)

We occasionally shorten it to Ned, but ds definitely prefers it in full.

moogmum · 12/12/2008 21:34

Love it. Was going to use it if either of DD1 or DD2 had been boys. And you can definitely shorten to Ted.

SummerLightning · 12/12/2008 21:38

Thanks everyone!
Yes, I learnt the hard way there re telling everyone, happy to ask on here and hear negatives/positives though. I have tried not telling anyone but DH cannot keep his gob shut (especially when drunk).
Also both sets of parents have nagged and nagged until we told, and then didn't like....sigh....but I think we have decided tough luck.

Have you tried the decoy name? Think of something really terrible (to you) and use that when questions are asked. Then pull out your preference when the times comes. They'll be so relieved...

LynetteScavo · 12/12/2008 22:04

I like the name Edmund - but it is a bit posh. Not enough to be bullied though.

I have said it before and I will say it again

IF YOU AND YOUR DH LIKE A NAME USE IT, AND DON'T GIVE A FF WHAT ANYBODY ELSE THINKS.
