Why do loads of boy babies get named after their dads, but girls don't get named after their mums?

I've met several male babies recently who have been given their dad's name, and I know it happens a lot with aristocrats and famous people, eg George Bush etc.

However I don't think I've ever met a little girl named after her mother. I can't think of any famous examples either.

Has anybody named their dd after themselves? Or is it just one of these old male traditions?

ds1 has dh name as middle name.but i didnt even consider giving dd my name for some reason.

SniffyHock · 11/12/2008 13:30

Like cheeseandsprouts - I'm expecting DC 3 and we've already agreed middle names, if it's a boy he will have DH's name but I wouldn't give a girl mine. Don't know why though!

DH suggested using his name as a first name but I maintain I don't want a son named after the person I have sex with

I think it's because the son takes the Last name - it's for posterity - keeping the name in the family etc... Archimedes Makepeace Alwin Jorge Hadrian Smythe-Dalloway the fifteenth.

I suppose it saves on having all the silverware re-engraved. Or maybe he can wear daddy's school socks, without dear old Nanny having to sew new labels on them

We thought long and hard about DD's name - and would have done if we'd had a boy - not to give a name that was in the family already - she's her own person after all, not just a clone of me.

Carolina Herrera's daughter is called Carolina Herrera. That's the only one I can think of. Oh and the Queen and QM!

I would never do it for son or daughter. Seems v. egotistical of the parents, unless it's a longstanding family tradition I suppose. Still wouldn't be happy though.

I think it's probably been because boys keep their surname their whole life so it will always be the same as the father's, but(historically) girls change their surname upon marriage.

TheVirginGoober · 11/12/2008 13:38

DS1's middle name is DH's name.

DD's middle name is my name.

pania · 11/12/2008 13:45

Oh middle names are completely different TVG! We'll probably do the same for our next baby if it's a boy.

Use my dh's name, not yours, that is .

I've got the same name as my mum, it's a family name used over several generations. I didn't give it to any of my dds and I kind of regret that now, but my second dd has it as a middle name.

littleboyblue · 11/12/2008 15:47

My mum has same name as her mum, but thankfully my mum didn't carry it on with me.
Think for the men it's just a bit of an ego thing?
My dp wanted to name ds1 after himself but as we had already agreed not to use any names of people we'd slept with.....

merrykittymas · 11/12/2008 15:49

My cousin has the same name as his Dad who has the same name as his Dad so 3 generations of for example Peter Jones but my cousin who is in his 40s will always be known as Wee Peter his Dad big Peter and his granpa Old Peter.

Theres a lot of that up here in Scotland Big Wullie and Wee Wullie

My eldest dsis was named after my Mum - and she hated it. It causes so much confusion over everyday things like phone calls, letters, and even the electoral roll - Mum was taken off it a few times as they said she was registered twice and couldn't have two votes - they even have similar initials which didn't really help clear up any confusion.

Madonna was named after her mum, fact fans.

It's Nigella Lawson I feel sorry for.

Simplysally · 11/12/2008 16:05

My dd's father was named after a deceased aunt (obviously a male equivalent of her name). I think this is quite common in the Jewish faith, to keep the name alive.

scorpio1 · 11/12/2008 16:06

my middle name is my mums name

Because men are egotistical and have no imagination whereas women are not and do.

princessmel · 11/12/2008 16:47

dd is named after my mum and nan

NowICanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 11/12/2008 16:56

D na N, true and true!!

belgo · 11/12/2008 16:59

My dd1's second name is a family name on my side, and dd2's second name is my dh's grandmother's name.

But I wouldn't give my dd my own first name, that would make life confusing.

georgiemum · 11/12/2008 17:07

I have one word for you...

Edna

Madonna was named after her mother (i believe) - one famous example but not commonplace, no.
