FAQ- Oluwaseun is nigerian- I know one, though he is known as Sean.

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 10/12/2008 21:27

thanks Peach - so I was pretty close then with my guess. I thought it seemed almost too obscure to be made up and only place I could think of that could have a name like that was somehwere north of Southern Africa lol

TortoiseRidesaReindeer · 10/12/2008 21:31

My DS2 is Zach but no-one ever spells it that way! It is always Zak/Zac. Annoys him and me lol!

Pinkchampagne · 10/12/2008 21:35

Can't see anything wrong with Mollie, Abbey or Reece.

Hulababy · 10/12/2008 21:40

Mollie is NOT misspelt!!! It is a very acceptable spelling variation of Molly and has been in use for well over 100 years, possibly longer.

Can't speak for the rest - they appear as misspellings rather than variations to me, but haven't done any research on any to know for sure.

Wheelybug · 10/12/2008 21:41

My neighbour, who is at least 70, is a mollie so agree with Hula.

Some of the others do appear a bit bonkers though!

Hulababy · 10/12/2008 21:42

When I did some reseach into Mollie I read that Mollie with ie is a more traditional English form of the name, which is a pet form of Mary. The y ending was often a more Amercian version of the name.

nkf · 10/12/2008 21:50

Not all of those names are odd though. Mollie doesn't seem that way off to me. And Charley isn't unusual. Kloe is way weird.

Simplysally · 10/12/2008 21:52

Is Elli a boy or a girl?

piscesmoon · 10/12/2008 22:06

Abbey is actually a very old name in its own right (not just short for Abigail). It has just gone out of favour in modern times.
I looked on the free births site and found about 100 from 1837 to 1906-I couldn't be bothered to count them correctly. There were 69 in the 1981 census.
Equally Mollie was a name in its own right, there were too many to list, it said 6770. There were 9188 matches for Charley.

My pet hate is the made up ones like Kloe, but it think it is nice to go back to 19th century for spellings.

conniedescending · 11/12/2008 14:17

Elli is a girl - pn Ellie

You've misspelt misspelt. Arf.

Hulababy · 11/12/2008 20:23

How s Reece supposed to be spelt? Not really come across that one before.

Umlellala · 11/12/2008 20:30

It's Welsh,innit but?
Rhys

nooka · 11/12/2008 20:38

Some of those names are just variants, not necessarily new. Reece for example is the standard Anglicized form of Welsh Rhys, so in England is not that surprising a spelling. I've certainly met a few (all kids, I think it's one of those names that had a popularity boom 10 years or so ago). Some are possibly shortenings and some are indeed weird.

However names are not a good way to teach spelling, as so many have a number of variants, even before the modern trend of spelling "any way I darn well please".

matildax · 11/12/2008 20:38

ok some of the names are not so great and the spelling is not the 'norm', but really so what....
does it really matter?
if someone wants to call their child kloe, well good for them.

i personally think its really rather snobby to think less of someone because of how they spell their name. and because there are so many zany spellings of names out there now it wont be so big a deal to our children.

Hulababy · 11/12/2008 20:45

Umlellela - ah, of course, yes!

catweazle · 11/12/2008 20:56

I can't see the problem with Abbey. I used to play with a neighbour of my grandparents called Abbey back in the 60s. I thought that was the logical way to spell it if it isn't short for Abigail.

kittybrown · 12/12/2008 10:32

I must admit I'm not too fussed by names having differnet spellings. I've got one myself and it's common old Katharine. There are at least 10 different ways to spell it. All it means is I have to spell it out each time but that doesn't really make life unbearable.

cornflakegirl · 12/12/2008 11:13

In my son's preschool class, there is a Frayer. I do think that's an unfortunate choice of spelling.

Xavielli · 12/12/2008 13:24

I have an Elli, sort for Eliana.. so adding another "e" as well as an extra "l" doesnt seem entirely logical.

beansontoast · 12/12/2008 13:34

your name fits this thread perfectly.

my dp is called zak and is forty...please please tell him how he should have been spelling his name all these years.thank god i found you.

CatchaChristmasStar · 12/12/2008 13:46

The most recent name spelling to make me cringe was a guy I went to school with naming his dd 'Mikkaylah.'

I can't stand it when people do it. I'm sorry, it's not origional, it's just silly. What's so wrong with liking a name, and using it's proper spelling?

RachieB · 12/12/2008 15:39

argh Kloe is just god damn awful! Chloe is such a nice name why spoil it

could just about live with the others
