I now regret that I can't buy personalised tat for my children

I almost called my DD Phoebe or Lydia, but in the end, ruled them out because they were in the top 100. NOW I just feel well that was a bit silly. ONLY know one Lydia and I don't know any Phoebes at all (although of course I know they're out there).

My dd would love mugs and pens and pencils and lunch boxes with her name on them.

Do you know that lots of online places, such as Asda and many others can make mugs up for you, just tell them what you want on it and they'll print it and post it out, also do keyrings, t-shirts etc.

NowICanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 09/12/2008 09:28

oh yeah!? post a link! I know you're right, there is that option. Costs a little more, but I think I need to get her something with her name on it.

Oh God, I feel your pain. I didnt call my dd a really unusual name - but did decide on an 'ie' ending rather than 'y' or 'ey'

Have seen lots of tat with 'y' and 'ey' endings but NOTHING with 'ie'........arrrrghh, all because I thought 'ie' looked nicer!

......and she asks for stuff....ALL the time.....

sharkyandgeorge · 09/12/2008 09:31

loads of stuff here

Umlellala · 09/12/2008 09:41

Oh,you can order stuff with any name on from letterbox (swanky) or studio(cheaper)

Interestingly, the names youfind on those change depending on where you are-noticed in Blackpool! (FWIW Ihave an ultra-common name and it always used to be sold out! Also my dad bought me a pen with 'Lisa' on it once cos I was about 7 and really wanted to be called it )

ellceeell · 09/12/2008 10:04

Or put her name as the star of a book? My daughter loves these! www.nameinabook.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=3&zenid=f1c80bee9abc018ac0f6bb7ae59f9953

Fennel · 09/12/2008 10:06

My dd3 is always looking out for a plastic mug with her name on. No chance. None of my dds have names that are ever on those things. But you can get loads, online, as people say.

I haven't yet got around to ordering her a pink plastic drinking flask with her name on and lots of horrible tacky decoration, but I might one day.

BikeRunSki · 09/12/2008 10:10

Oooh, you've stirred a dormant bee in my bonnet here!

My sister has a name that was very very common in the mid seventies when she was born, and my brothers have traditional names that have never really been trendy or not. I have a name that is not "unusual" as such, but was totally out of fashion when I was a child (although very popular now). I was always incredibly envious whenever we were in tat shops and their names were all on pens, mugs etc and mine wasn't. Even if my parents weren't going to buy us anything anyway. And when they did I ended up with the generic blank "girl" design.

DS has a very normal, traditional name that must have been in the top 10 for about 1000 years. Although he is only 13 weeks old, I have started to check out personalised tat. His name is always there. Yey!

MrsMattie · 09/12/2008 10:11

lol

I have an unusual name and was always disappointed that i couldn't get crappy plastic tat from theme park souvenir shops with my name on it.

But as consolation, at least I'm not called Sharon

flowerytaleofNewYork · 09/12/2008 10:12

Agree with bikerunski, I was always very upset that there was never anything with my name on it

Now my name is quite popular with litle girls, so there's stuff everywhere.

However I have realised that I have inflicted the same thing on DS - have never seen anything with his name on it either. Although it is much easier to get personalised stuff ordered and made up now than it was in the 80s.

kayzisexpecting · 09/12/2008 10:19

I was also upset by never seeing anything with my name on it. Now I can get stuff with my name on as it is quite popular now.

But I have never seen anything with my DS's name on it.

Gorionine · 09/12/2008 10:28

Thanks for the link sharkyandgeorge (was it a cartoon or is my memory failing me?) My Dcs also have unusual names.

mrsfossil · 09/12/2008 17:52

My ds has a bit of an uncommon name and you would never find it on tat. So i think we are lucky less tat to clutter the house. Also my name was very common for babies in 1970s as a result there were about 8 of us in my school year with the same name. My middle name was the 2nd most common girls name. So your child will probably thank you one day.

LynetteScavo · 09/12/2008 17:56

I'm now intrriged as to what you did call them NowICanSpellGeansaiNollaig?

misdee · 09/12/2008 18:00

dd3 wants one pf those plastic mugs with her name on. but she is called serena and can never find one.

TsarHumbug · 09/12/2008 18:00

All mine have unusual-ish names and never appear any mugs, keyrings etc.

I always look anyway but then feel faintly pleased about it for some reason. I've never worked out why.

grumpalina · 09/12/2008 18:19

You know it's always been one of the reasons I have felt sorry for children with 'unusual' names. At what age do they realise they are NEVER going to find their name on one of those personalised items!!!! isn't that one of life's sad pleasures finding your name on the display even though you have no intention of buying???

However I came unstuck myself really with DS2 who does not have what I would regard as an unusual name. It could also be regarded as a Christmas name (Robin although he was born in July!!!!. I was really miffed on his first Christmas when I couldn't find his name on any of the personalised decorations but had no problems with DS1's decidedly unchrismassy name!! In fact I have never found his name on a premade personalised item apart form once with the 'y' spelling which I regard as the girls spelling

muggglewump · 09/12/2008 18:26

What's the name?
DD is called Niamh. Not wierd or silly but fairly unusual when you think in terms of buying personalised tat things.
I've got her a keyring, mug, doorsign, piggy bank and just today saw a bauble. Ok they had no Niamh baubles left but the name was there as in they do sell them.

TinselBaublesMistletoe · 09/12/2008 18:35

Tink's name has been in the top 100 for a few years, quite high on it too in all it's spellings but I can never buy anything for her.

Gorionine: Sharky and George, crime busters of the seas...

NowICanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 09/12/2008 23:41

Lynette, Their names are not 'a bit different'. As people say! They are just outside of top 100 that's all! If I told you, you'd just say 'oh' I bet. But I bet you would know how to spell the names correctly too I bet. You would probably ONLY know a couple though. And probably no more under ten than you'd know of your own age.

Hope that takes the mystery out of it!

I took a look at that site, and it's nice but it's stuff for adults really isn't it?

ladyr · 10/12/2008 23:47

Here's a site where you can make your child the star of the bedtime story. My dd loves them..I've got her one of these for xmas..click here to see a demo book

Simplysally · 10/12/2008 23:50

I can set your mind at ease on one thing.... it's quite difficult to find things with Phoebe on although you can find Paige.... (only known one Paige) then it jumps to Rachel.

Don't know about Lydia .

My daughters have unusual names too and will never find any tat with their names on. We gave them common middle names though, so the house is full of plastic rubbish with Jade and Aimee on

EachPeachPearMum · 12/12/2008 17:06

Why would you want to? As you say- it is tat!
I never could find anything with my name on when I was little, and my DC never will either tbh. It made me feel special unlike all those Lisas, Sharons, Traceys, Karens etc.

G'wan- tell us the name
