How do you say Clementine?

Help!

Work colleague has just emailed to say she has had a baby girl, named Clementine.

I have to ring her tomorrow. She is the sort to be offended if I get it wrong.

Is it Clemen TEEN or Clemen TYNE?

Ooh glad there are others out there! Just named our new baby Clementine. Had a few raised eyebrows and "hmmm how unusuals" when we tell people the name but we love it. Telling myself it is not in the Gwyneth Paltrow Apple league becuase it was a name before it was an orange.

And am too polite to put people right who pronounce it ClemenTEEN but this thread has given me the courage of my convictions that it is pronounced TYNE which I think sounds much prettier.

MrsSeanBean · 09/12/2008 12:56

Aww congrats kerala - it's a beautiful name

ButIForgetMysElf · 09/12/2008 14:11

Best friend's daughter - Clemen-TYNE.

But she's only ever been referred to as "Monkey". Even now, aged 10.

Iklboo · 09/12/2008 14:18

Didn't Mark Owen (Take That) have a song out yonks ago Clemen-tyne?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2008 14:19

Clementeen

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2008 14:21

You phone and either don't mention the name or ask her outright how she is pronouncing it. Whatever she says, you say "Oh, that's what I thought but I'd heard some people say

pamelat · 09/12/2008 14:24

Tyne

as in the "oh my darling" song

Anna8888 · 09/12/2008 14:26

I would say "Clemen-teen" because I live in France and I know Anglo-French children with this name here and they pronounce it the French way.

But I agree that Clemen-tyne is perfectly acceptable pronunciation in English.

browntrout · 09/12/2008 14:38

kerala - ive got a 2 year old clemen-TYNE and believe me you just get used to answering the question and politely correcting those who say it the other way. i love the name and, last week, she finally mastered saying it herself (poor wee thing!).

Tortington · 09/12/2008 14:39

TEEN.

tyne is weird

ByThePowerOfBaileys · 09/12/2008 14:40

Tyne

migolapland · 09/12/2008 16:10

teen

justworried · 09/12/2008 16:14

Tyne

jujumaman · 09/12/2008 16:43

Tyne is definitely correct in English.

Teen is the French version and in English means a fruit.

I know this because researched it lengthily when we considered the name for dd2 but eventually rejected it as we could see too much confusion over pronunciation. This thread makes me glad we did Called her something v similar, instead

claireybaubles · 23/12/2008 16:26
