Hello. Not sure if I have spelt them right but just wanted to see what people thought.

Madeline - I have always loved this name. DD might have been called it but at the time there was so much going on with poor maddie macann it just didn't seem right. But the name still reminds me of her so not sure??

Layla - I really like this name but 100%. DH said its "alright" which is still an improvement to the no I usually get for names!!

Btw, we don't asctually know we are having a girl. Will find out next week but wanted to do this before I forget!

i like layla more than madeline i think its lovely.

Anna8888 · 04/12/2008 17:26

Madeleine is the usual spelling. It's quite pretty and by the time your DD grows up no one will be talking about Madeleine McCann, whatever the outcome of that tragic story is.

Layla - don't like it.

chloemegjess · 04/12/2008 18:18

I would spell it the normal way. I wa sjust being lazy by not knowing and not bothing to look it up!

I like Layla

veryhungrycaterpillar · 04/12/2008 19:38

How about 'Leila'? I love it spelt that way...

pointydog · 04/12/2008 19:52

Madeleine is nice.

Leila is nice.

Layla is pure Clapton Naff.

chloemegjess · 04/12/2008 20:34

How is leila pronounced? Is it the same name just spelt different? I have never seen it spelt like that. Looks a bit of a funny spelling to be honest. If you had said that without layla being in the same thread I wouldn't even know that is what is meant to be I don't think

Agree on Layla, just conjures up a tranvestite in my book.

Leila much nicer.

TigerFeet · 04/12/2008 20:35

I think Madeleine is a beautiful name - agree with Anna888 that in a few years' time the Madeleine McCann association will not be quite so strong.

nkf · 04/12/2008 20:36

I've never seen the name Layla before. Is it the same as Leila or Leyla. Both names are pretty. And yes you've spelled Madeleine incorrectly.

chloemegjess · 05/12/2008 10:33

Same as Leyla yes. I have seen Layla and Leyla, but not Leila.

I have just seen a name, written as Lyla - do you think this is pronounced the same?

I love Madeleine.

Layla I dislike intensely in irrational way.

macherie · 05/12/2008 10:41

My mum is Madeleine, pronounced Mad-a-lane.

Almost everyone calls her either Mad-a-leen, which she hates, or Mad-a-lynn, which she really hates, or even Mad-a-line, which she hates most!

Just something to consider, as it would drive me crazy if everyone mis-pronounced my name. I think it is such a lovely name, and considered it for dd, but the mis-pronociation put me off.

suwoodolf · 05/12/2008 10:43

My DD is Madeleine, so I love it. The correct spelling is indeed Leila which is much nicer IMO than Layla.

Pinkchampagne · 05/12/2008 13:46

Prefer Madeleine to Layla. Not keen on Layla, but it does look better spelt Leila.

chloemegjess · 05/12/2008 14:40

I am not worried about spelling for now, can sort that out once we have picked a name.

Glad everybody seems to like them though. I know a few don't, but the last name thread I started nearly everybody hated it so there is an improvement!

Leila is an Arabic name and it means dark or night or something similar.

On a little dark haired Arabic girl Leila would be beautiful. However, if you don't have Arabic connections and you are likely to have a fair haired or pale child then I think Leila would be an odd choice.

artichokes · 05/12/2008 14:45

If you want a more anglo name that is similar to Leila, then would you consider
Lila (Kate Moss' daughter).

mrsout · 05/12/2008 16:10

UM, artichokes, I have a blonde haired little girl called Leila! oh well, it suits her. Didnt like the spelling Layla, thought it was just lazy.

chloemegjess · 05/12/2008 18:08

How is Lila pronounced? My friends sister has just called her baby Lilia and wouldn't want to "copy" such an unusual name

OP posts:
Pinkchampagne · 05/12/2008 18:56

ly-la

Pinkchampagne · 05/12/2008 18:57

As in last part of Delila

artichokes · 05/12/2008 19:11

Lila is "Lie-la"
Lilia is "Lil-ee-a"

So they sound as different as Lilia and Leila.

merryandmad · 05/12/2008 19:13

My grandmother was Leila and it is also my sisters middle name. We pronounce it "Lee-La" rather than "Ley-la"

MrsMattie · 06/12/2008 09:49

Leila is lovely.
