Do your children like their names?

After all the debate we go through in choosing names and some of us are even daft enough to ask MN what they think , I wondered if those of you with older children like their names. (if child likes their name not parent)

I can imagine that if your ds is a 'moonbucket' then maybe that might not be appreciated when they get to secondary school, but what if he's a Jack or a Connor for instance?

Does the child shorten or change it slightly to be different if there are a few in their year/class or do they not mind?

My 15 yr old Benedict likes his name I think. His only stipulation of late has been that we desist calling him Bene, and instead call him Ben (urgh) or Benedict. So I imagine he can't dislike it that much.

Daughter 1, Felicity (13) loves her name (and it has many possible shortenings) but HATES her middle name (to the extent that she refuses to tell anyone what it is).

Daughter 2, Cecilia (11) likes her too. She's generally the only one she knows, and is rather miffed if she occasionally comes across another.

10 yr old Saffron loves her name as she is the only one around locally and likes to be unique. She will not allow it to be shortened though.

hmm, I do suspect that it's pre-teen onwards when the troubles start. If you don't mind me saying your children don't have particularly common names though.
I've only ever known one Felicity who was called 'flick'. Beautiful names btw.

I was thinking about this yesterday after a conversation with my 15yo nephew who was relaying a story about a kid called Connor. I said " Oh Connor xxx?" to which he replied "No Connor zzz".
Then ensued a 10 minute conversation whereby he went through a list of various Connor's all in his year, who live locally.

It got me thinking about how I would feel if there had been loads of kids with the same name in my class/year. I think I'd have hated been one of many much more than I hated (albeit briefly) my name.

"I want to be called Lamborghini or Enzo, after the maker of Ferrari" says one of mine. So that would be a no, then.

MincePirate · 04/12/2008 14:11

my dd regularly says 'i love my name mummy!!'

My childrens names are amongst the photos on my profile.
They all still love them.
DS1 went off his when he was about 12 but likes it again now

Andthentherewerethree · 04/12/2008 14:15

my ds 2 has a fairly common name but surprisignly there are no others in his school! they are all connors and callums (and a few other spellings of those names)he asked if he could change his name though as friends keep calling him willy. His name is William in case you didn;t guess from that, oh and hes 6.

my eldest is almost 12 and has a very unusual name and he loves it, he says it gets too confusing at school as they are all called, jack, jake, callum or connor and often referred to as jack p, jack c etc.

DeckHallsWithFIMBOughsofHolly · 04/12/2008 14:15

My dd (10.5) likes her name.

Ds (4) likes his too, he gets very annoyed by nicknames and likes to be known by his name.

Neither are overly fond of their surname and give dh grief on occasion!

TigerFeet · 04/12/2008 14:16

My dd often tells me she thinks her name is pretty. There are two with her name in her year and a few more through the school - there were loads at nursery (6 I think) but she likes having the same name as some of her friends. Whether she thinks the same when she's a bit older remains to be seen.

sorkycake · 04/12/2008 14:23

I'm not sure there's too much we can do about the popularity of names is there?

Obv there are tons of jack/ella's, so if you would choose that name now then yes there are likely to be a boatload with the same name because it's already rather popular.

Our biggest concern has always been will it become popular?

It did seem when we were rowing up that there were fewer different names about (70's).
It does mystify me now that even with all the made up names and borrowed from other cultures etc, there can still be 4 Jack's in a class of 25 children

My eldest son ( 12) is Connor,he is the only one with that name in his year, and we dont know anyone else locally with it either
He likes his name

lots of Jack,James,Daniels in his year so he tells me

youngest son(6)is Ellis
he loves his name as no one else has it
I loved all the El names when pregnant ; Elliot / Elijah / Ellis etc and glad we went for Ellis in the end

BoccaDellaNativita · 05/12/2008 22:28

We gave our daughter three names (sorry - didn't know at the time that that was near the top of the MN ponce-o-meter scale) and she quite likes them all, but has added several more names for good measure. She is now Ethel Gertrude Mavis Alice Grace Lily Milly Lily May. Only a few more years until she can do it officially through deed poll ....

princessgoat · 07/12/2008 13:22

My eldest loves her name and my two youngest arent old enough to judge yet, but my 11 year old feels left out as she was the only one of our 4 to get the 'normal name'.

Even though there isnt any other Ellie's in her year at school
Dawn xx

I don't know. The notion of liking or disliking their names hasn't occurred to them yet I think. When does that kick in then?

ladyjuliafish · 07/12/2008 15:45

My ds loves his name. He hates it if anyone shortens it or calls him by a nickname. It has just been slagged off on the names that make you snigger thread but he loves it and so do I.

purpleduck · 07/12/2008 15:59

DS loves his unusual-but-not-weird name. We have never come across another one and he loves being an only.

dd doesn't always like her unusual-but-not-weird name. She doesn't like being "the odd one out", and has said she want to change her name. She has thought maybe Annie

ramonaquimby · 07/12/2008 16:03

I htink kids don't really comment on their names until they get to a certain age - eldest (7rs) has never said anything one way or the other

I didn't really like my name growing up and really still don't - it's quite odd and doesn't go with the rest of my siblings who have lovely lovely names!

Overmydeadstuffedturkey · 07/12/2008 16:09

DS who's 5 likes his name

Unusually, he got to pick his own middle names when he was three (from a list I had already approved )

I love the names he chose

I've just figured out that you're hatrick!

Hulababy · 07/12/2008 21:40

6y Mollie likes her nam a lot. She isn't as impressed with some of her friends shorten it to Moll though.

ketal · 08/12/2008 20:01

My 5 year old Eloise says she likes her name because it is pretty and different (There are lots of Ellies and so on, but no other Eloises). She did go through a stage of not liking it and prefering to be called Ella, but we're firmly back with Eloise at the mo

Antdamm · 10/12/2008 17:15

My 3yr old loves his cos he is named John, after his Grandad- Dp's dad. He absolutely loves his Grandad and no-one around where we live or at his nursery is called John!!!
