How would you shorten...

...Quentin?

We've just found out we're having a boy and really like the name. As our surname is short, we'd like a name that has 2-3 syllables but won't get shortened regularly. What (if any) nicknames can you think of for Quentin? Thanks.

Our dd is Sophie and (so far, anyway) gets called her full name .

'Q'

castille · 28/11/2008 11:01

My (French) nephew is called Quentin. So far no one shortens it, but my DS used to call him Tintin

bettythebuilder · 28/11/2008 11:06

Quent? Not sure if anyone would say that though. Often names that can't be shortened get made longer, but I think Quentin's long enough- Quentintin's a bit of a mouthful

PenelopePitstops · 28/11/2008 11:07

Quen

or tin

PenelopePitstops · 28/11/2008 11:08

is sophie at school yet she will become soph!

mopsyflopsy · 28/11/2008 11:10

I know a teenage Quentin and he gets called Q.

sophiesmummie · 28/11/2008 11:18

Thanks for replying so far. I'm hoping its just the right length to avoid being shortened.... Actually just Q would sound a bit silly with our surname..

Yes, I guess Sophie will become Soph, but I think that will sound ok with our surname.

Gosh, so many factors to consider... and that after me and dh finally agree

Tarantino..?

Sorry...really don't like the name though....and that's in spite of knowing a lovely Quentin.

scorpio1 · 28/11/2008 19:38

Do you not like nicknames then? My childrens names are nicknamey already, as my name gets constantly shortened even by people i dont know which i hate...I like Quinn, not much chance of shortening.

I would shorten Quentin to Q.

sophiesmummie · 28/11/2008 21:54

Scorpio, I don't mind nicknames at all - I think they sound cute/charming.

However, we have have a short, one-syllable surname. In that case a short nickname can sound silly when said together.... thats why we're after a name thats not too long to have to be shortened and not too short (preferrably 2 syllables) to sound silly... hope that makes sense .
Dh and I have finally found a name we both like, Quentin, but I'm getting worried that it might be shortened regularly to Q (that would sound silly with our surname....

The only Quentin I've ever known was always called Q- they all are it's the law.

thisisyesterday · 28/11/2008 22:00

i probably wouldn't shorten it. just use Quentin

ch1cago · 28/11/2008 22:03

same here, the only Quentin I know is called Q by everyone, himself included

bettythebuilder · 29/11/2008 22:04

I can see that if your surname was, for example, Ball, then 'Q' would be a real problem- too snooker-y (cue ball!)

Piffle · 29/11/2008 22:08

the only quentin I know changed his name at first legal opportunity after years of bullying! Changed it to lennox...
This was hot on heels of famous five era though with queer uncle quentin, I think of late it has had a Renaissance?

Lubyloo · 29/11/2008 22:08

I also know a Quentin who is called Q by everyone but his mum.

cyteen · 29/11/2008 22:09

Wen. But I'm lazy.

Have to be Q.

PixieMoon · 01/12/2008 21:21

Quin?

Mammina · 01/12/2008 21:30

Tintin?

othersideofchannel · 02/12/2008 10:14

Quentin seems to be becoming more popular - I've met two baby Quentins in the past 6 months alone.... Not sure you would need to shorten it, though - its short enough imo.

CharleeInPantoPaperChains · 02/12/2008 10:16

Quen and Soph.

ladymoo · 02/12/2008 10:21

Q

WotsThatSkippy · 02/12/2008 10:24

Do you need to shorten it? It's a short name, anyway. 'Q' is poncy.
