what do you think? It's a name I know as being a very old Derbyshire name, but I can't find anything about it on t'internet, and I'm worried that it might sound American

iirc from past googling, Tennessee Williams had a brother called this, which worries me about the American sounding aspect

and I know that a character from 'The History Boys' was called Dakin, which is good because that is Yorkshire

I think it is related to Deakin and Deacon. There is surprisingly little online but if you can find a good reference library there should be information on the history of British surnames.

RomanCandleQueen · 28/11/2008 12:50

Sounds like athletes foot powder.

hullygully · 28/11/2008 12:54

As long as he doesn't do any Shakin and Bakin.

PuppyMonkey · 28/11/2008 12:56

It does sound a tad American and not in a good way imho, sorry.

I live in Derbyshire and have never once encountered a Dakin as a first name.

Grammaticus · 28/11/2008 12:59

It sounds like a modern made up name. Which is a shame, if it isn't!

DeckHallsWithFIMBOughsofHolly · 28/11/2008 13:00

There is Daegon at ds's school

atowncalledalice · 28/11/2008 13:12

It's a surname common in Yorkshire (also spelt Daykin). The History Boys characters are all referred to by their surnames. Don't use it as a first name!

Sesi · 28/11/2008 13:34

First thing to come to mind was Daikon radish.....
But leaving that association to one side it does sound like a modern, American name a la Jayden. So if that?s not what you want I wouldn?t use it.

MinkyBorage · 28/11/2008 19:20

Hmmm, I feared as much, I really love it, but that's perhaps because the village I'm from in rural Derbyshire had an old farming family with Dakins traditionally in it, and the youngest Dakin was a lovely good, solid bloke.
Also, hadn't thoughth thaT THE history boys names were all surnames. duh, can't believe I didn't notice

OP posts:
atowncalledalice · 28/11/2008 19:35

If you love it that much, use it anyway - it's your baby! And although it's along the lines of Jayden etc, it doesn't scream chavvy. Are you still in Yorkshire?

Wags · 28/11/2008 19:39

FIL's middle name is Dakin. Will have to ask DH where it came from/what its origins are, if he knows that is .

Wags · 28/11/2008 19:41

FIl is in his 70's by the way, so think its more likely to be an old family name or something.

SquiffyHock · 28/11/2008 19:41

PMSL at hullygully!

TheNewsMongrel · 28/11/2008 19:46

I don't like Deacon but I would rather use this form as it's clearer. It is obvious how it's pronounced, and it's obviously and English word, so people won't say oooh is that Irish/Russian/Greek????

MinkyBorage · 29/11/2008 11:34

ooh, yes, WAHS, please ask him, I'd be really interested

OP posts:
MinkyBorage · 29/11/2008 11:35

sorry *WAGS

Wags · 01/12/2008 10:19

I did ask DH and he only knows that it was also his Grandfather's name so he passed it on to FIL. FIL by the way doesn't like it, so hasn't passed it on to any of his sons. Will still get him to ask FIl about it though.

MinkyBorage · 01/12/2008 15:51

ah, thanks Wags. IT's a funny one, I really really like this name, but my associations with it are different to others'.
Don't know really. It's between Dakin and Stanley. Still undecided, but erring towards Stanley atm.

I read a fantastic book when I was a child called 'The farthest away mountain'. The main character is a girl called Dakin. I'm not sure who the author was - Lyn Reid Banks, I think.

MinkyBorage · 01/12/2008 20:47

Great, thanks stopthelights, found the book here

stopthelights · 01/12/2008 21:14

I've always loved the name. Loved the character too .

cyteen · 01/12/2008 21:16

stopthelights, I was just about to say the same thing! That was my very favourite book when I was little. Dakin is such a cool character.

I bought it again recently and enjoyed it just as much, especially the sad gargoyles going "Ahhhhhhhhhh!" all the time

stopthelights · 02/12/2008 18:04

Cyteen, I found my old copy in the attic when I last went home. I so want to read it to my two dds to see if they'll love it as much as I did

mogwai · 12/12/2008 22:00

dakin is a brand of air conditioning units popular in Australia.
