We're having trouble with boy's names this time round... dh likes Francis but I'm not sure (have always preferred Frances for a girl). I like Reuben but dh isn't sure. We both like Bede - we'd like to have a saint's name and it goes well with our surname - but I'm not sure what the rest of the world will think! Honest opinions please - will he get beaten up in the playground??

Bede - no. Benjamin?
Don't go for something too poncey for a boy, they do tend to feel it more in the playground.

KatieMorag · 26/11/2008 20:42

with bede - yes

francis and reuben fine

where we live francis is shortened to frank and is quite out of fashion at the moment

Lilyloo · 26/11/2008 20:43

What about Jude a bit more boyish than Bede ? Still a saints name

falcon · 26/11/2008 20:44

I like Reuben, but not Francis or Bede.

cece · 26/11/2008 20:48

I only like Francis.

Here are loads of suggestions for Saint's names...

mersmam · 26/11/2008 20:51

Looks like Bede is a bit unpopular then so I'm glad I posted this! I agree about the ponceyness - it's just a shame it's not a bit more common because then it would be more accepted, and the saint was actually great - not at all poncey I need a famous manly celeb called Bede to appear in the media over the next few months and then everyone would be fine with it!!
I actually prefer the shortening Frank to Francis and LOVE that it's not fashionable - don't want my ds to share his name with five others in his class.
Looks like Reuben is the fave then (yay )

that's a great link cece thanks!

girlandboy · 26/11/2008 20:53

Reuben - yes
Francis - maybe, think I prefer it for a girl
Bede - NO

The only Bede I've ever heard of was truly Venerable!

mersmam · 26/11/2008 20:53

lilyloo - I do quite like Jude but we already have one in the extended family so would rather avoid...

I've just looked at the list of siants names and I quite like Alban - Ally for short.

ScummyMummy · 26/11/2008 20:56

Bede!?!? As in The Venerable? No no and thrice no. Reuben is great and Francis is fine.

mersmam · 26/11/2008 20:56

But why is everyone so against Bede? Is it purely the ponceyness? It's such a shame because I think the only reason it's disliked is because it's not widely used. I'm sure there are other poncey names for boys that are just accepted!

OP posts:
mersmam · 26/11/2008 20:57

Yes Alban is nice - but still prefer Bede Guess I will be too afraid to use it though - perhaps a middle name??

rachels103 · 26/11/2008 21:00

I know a lovely little boy called Reuben so I like it. Not sure about the other 2

mrsgboring · 26/11/2008 21:05

Bede Harrington is a character in David Lodge's Therapy - he lives up to his poncey name. (I feel for you though because we like it too. In fact, Durham Cathedral is very important to us and we couldn't use Cuthbert either - sigh)

Reuben is getting quite common round our way - at least 3 I can think of under 3.

Don't personally like Francis that much, but that's just a personal opinion and think it would make a good name.

falcon · 26/11/2008 21:07

I quite like Ambrose.[Blush]

mersmam · 26/11/2008 21:09

mrsboring - there is still Aidan
I am so glad that another person in this world likes the name Bede! Didn't know about the David Lodge book though - how anoying.

I love Reuben but keep having girls lol

what about Bodie or Brodie?

mersmam · 26/11/2008 21:10

Falcon, I can understand why you like Ambrose but for me it always has associations with rice pudding and custard...

NorthernLurker · 26/11/2008 21:11

Oooh I like Bede but it may be a bit much. Could you use Benedict known as Bede and then you can try it out but have options if it flops?

mrsgboring · 26/11/2008 21:12

Yes, but two other people I know have used it and DH doesn't like it. We're going for a saint local to where we live now and the name is really growing on me.

Ambrose is gorgeous (partly for the rice pudding overtones) but I could never ever use it.

mersmam · 26/11/2008 21:12

That's not a bad idea Northernlurker - would never have thought of it! Thank you.

OP posts:
falcon · 26/11/2008 21:13

Perhaps that's why I like it so much.

mersmam · 26/11/2008 21:14

What is it mrsboring? Promise i won't copy

Oh all right, have posted on here before but it's top secret in real life. Edmund.
