Rowan for a boy - is there a problem with unisex names

I like Rowan for a boy. Does anyone have a unisex name and wish they didn't?

I also like Robin.

I wanted Robin for a boy (with Bobby as a nickname) but DH vetoed it too for the same reason as sleepycat's.
I like Rowan too

BikeRunSki · 24/11/2008 17:37

I know a boy Rowan and think it is a lovely name. I also know a girl Rowan, and don't find it confusing at all.

I think Robin for a girl is usually Robyn though, isn't it?

BibiThree · 24/11/2008 17:38

My nephew is a Rowan and until he was born I thought of it as a girls name exclusively, but he's a boyish boy iykwim and it suits him, not wussy in the slightest.

ChairmumMiaow · 24/11/2008 17:40

my DS is called Rowan and nobody has ever commented unkindly about the unisex nature of the name. He's definitely (already at 10 months) a very "boyish" boy.

ChairmumMiaow · 24/11/2008 17:41

Good taste in names by the way

madlentileater · 24/11/2008 17:45

no probs for DS! (20yrs!)
But, when he was born, mw said (Scottish accent) 'Och, I'm SO glad you didna call him Robin, Robin's such a poofter's name'

only later did we realise the appropriate response was,
'that's funny, none of the poofters we know are called Robin'

guyFAwkesreQuiem · 24/11/2008 17:52

I've never known Rowan as anything but a boys name. At school I had a friend who her dad was convinced was going to be a boy, and he wanted the name Rowan............obviously she was a girl so they called her Rowena as Rowan was a boys name (apparently) .........but he still calls her Rowan to this day

rosealbie · 24/11/2008 17:56

Great choice with Rowan.

Ds (7) is Rowan and definately 'boyish'.

My friend has a daughter called Rowan and I don't find it confusing at all.

brimfull · 24/11/2008 18:06

RachieB · 24/11/2008 21:41

I like Rowan, definately. no problem with unisex names, I have a little girl Frankie, but hypened it with -Mae to avoid confusion.

oopsidaisy · 25/11/2008 12:14

thank you all. I love both Rowan and Robin for boys - not sure which I prefer right now. I think probably Rowan as not really a short version whereas I don't really like Rob for Robin.

my friends DS is called Roan which i would def associate with a boy - lovely name though spelt either way

ChairmumMiaow · 26/11/2008 07:47

oopsidaisy - Our Rowan gets called 'the Rowster' or 'Row Row' by his young cousins, so there's no avoiding nicknames, even if they are silly

kayzisexpecting · 26/11/2008 07:58

I think it is lovely and until I saw this thread I only thought of it as a boys name.

chatname · 05/12/2008 03:57

Archbishop of Canterbury! I think it is fine for a boy or a girl.

yawningmonster · 05/12/2008 04:08

we have Roan on our list of possibilities if our bump has boy bits but like it with the w also,

oopsidaisy · 10/12/2008 12:07

yes, archibishop of canterbury and rowan williams, but neither of these particularly bad associations are they?

I think Rowan for a boy is lovely not sure about a girl though because I did think it was a boys name only

I have identical twin sisters who are 3, one is called Jaimee and one is Teigan even when both dressed in girlie clothes with hair tied up we still get 'oh so it's a boy and a girl' bloody annoying.

Sorry just wanted to warn you of that is annoying.

StephanieByng · 10/12/2008 12:12

I would assume it was a boy's name; though I do know one female Rowan, she's the only one I've ever met.

It's a lovely, lovely name

prettybutterfly · 10/12/2008 17:03

Rowen and Robin delightful names. I think of them as boys' names I suppose, and Robyn and Rowena as girls' names, but only mostly.
