Dita or Edie for short. Internet reckons it's a Spanish variant of Edith, but it seems to belong mainly to Eastern Europeans

i like it.

Anglepoise · 11/12/2008 17:46

Have I managed to start the least controversial name thread ever?

Edie for short.

Agree with christiana that it sounds like "editor". What's wrong with Edith?

thumbElf · 11/12/2008 17:58

s'all right but she would have pronunciation issues, as mentioned.

basementbear · 11/12/2008 18:05

I used to work with a Polish girl called Edita, never heard it while I lived in Spain. I think it's very pretty though but people will call her Edith (which IMO is not so pretty)

artichokes · 11/12/2008 18:07

My Polish cleaner is Edita and to my ear it is very Eastern European. I think it is pretty (reminds me abit of Evita).

27 · 11/12/2008 18:07

I know someone called Edita. I quite like it. People dont seem to have any problems pronouncing it.

Anglepoise · 11/12/2008 18:09

Edith is my paternal gran's name which I like but my mum hates! Felt Edita gave more options - Dita now (I like Ms Von Teese ) and Edie if she picks that when she's older.

Go for it, it's a great name.
(I'd like Edie for mine, but DP not keen.)

frisbyrat · 12/12/2008 20:51

Latin for "having been given out" or "having been given birth to". Most suitable!

Amapoleon · 12/12/2008 20:52

I'm in Spain and have never met an Edita but I have taught a few Polish girls called that.

devoutsceptic · 12/12/2008 20:54

I do love Edith though. So elegant. So many role models. And it is a family name, so perfect. Don't mess with it!

ChristmasFairySantAsSLut · 12/12/2008 20:57

How about Edyta...after that dancer in Dancing wityh trhe Stars....here....she is gorgeous....and the name does sound great

ChristmasFairySantAsSLut · 12/12/2008 20:58

And Anna...I actually know an Editor...she is from Botswana....
first when I saw her name written on the rota I thought it was misspelled, lol...

Gemzooks · 12/12/2008 21:19

I like it in itself but think it's better to avoid giving a name where the kid will constantly have to explain that 'it's like Edith but not and you pronounce it x y z.'

HarktheheraldAnglepoise · 13/12/2008 02:36

Thanks - my main concerns were that it sounded either made-up or a bit try-hard, so my mind is now put at rest

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 13/12/2008 10:35

It sounds like a verb in Spanish, not a name.

Tbh, it's horrible. Edith is much, much nicer.
If you want something withthat flavour, what about Elvira?

LaDiDaDi · 13/12/2008 10:37

I really like it. I also like Vita.

belgo · 13/12/2008 10:37

I would stick with Edith. It's nicer then Edita.

hippipotami · 13/12/2008 10:48

Sounds a bit like a badly spoken version of the word editor.

I would stick with Edith, with Edie for short. That is my fave-if-I-were-to-have-another-baby-name of the moment.

prettybutterfly · 13/12/2008 12:55

I know Vita is a nn for Victoria, but I didn't know it was used as a name in its own right. Is it?

It's quite nice.

Edita quite nice too. Not smitten though.

prettybutterfly · 13/12/2008 12:56

Edith seems not very pretty to me.

ChristmasFairySantAsSLut · 13/12/2008 13:36

Edith and Elvira.....people...really....those names are as bad as Agnes abd Gertrude, lol....

Saying that I do know a very stunning Edith, in Germany, where her name is pronounced Eh-dit..

How about Esther though...that is a nice name, I think....
