Names with hyphens - are they almost always shortened?

Hello, am thinking of a name for our next baby if it happens to be a girl and quite like the name Anne-Sophie.
In your experience, do names with hyphens more often than not get shortened to the first name, (eg in this case Anne) at school and by friends etc, or not? Thanks!

As with shortenings, it depends on what you specify when they start school, and then on what your dd wants to be called.

Depends if they 'flow' IMO. A friend's daughter is called Ellie-Mae and it's seldom shortened. The 2 you've chosen, whilst both lovely names, I would say are bound to be shortened because they don't trip off the tongue together.

I would agree that as they dont roll off the toungue they are likely to be shortened. How about sophie-anne??

LadySweet · 18/11/2008 23:20

I have a hyphenated name and it has never been shortened. When I was at primary school a few people tried calling for me with the shortened version and my mum said "oh you mean ..."

RachieB · 19/11/2008 20:52

i agree Anne - Sophie doesnt sound that great together TBH

I have a cousin Emma - Jane ,and as soon as she went to secondary school she was only known as Emma ! lol

some names are cute for when little eg all the Rose / Mae type ,second names, but not for when older IMO,so yes i think they would get shortened

I've got a hypenated name (Anne-Marie) and I hate hate hate it! I have been known as Annie since I was 7. It's a right pain in the arse to explain to people when they are writing/typing your name, especially over the phone. And my name is hardly a weird one. You would be surprised at the number of call-centre staff that don't know what a hyphen is. Lots of people just call me Anne - which I hate even more than the full name.

hello and thanks for all your comments! That is really interesting feedback. I would have thought for example, Anne-Marie would have not caused trouble, as like you say, it is hardly an unusual hyphenated name! Anne-Sophie is more common in France and Germany than here, so it may well prove troublesome.... Hmmm, back to the drawing board I think.... Am also considering Alexandra so maybe that will be a lot simpler, or Amelie (which I guess will always need to be spelt out though!) I have a couple more weeks before the due date to decide! Thanks again.

That's funny, Anne-sophie is fairly common in France and really rolls of the tongue there, you wouldn't shorten it as people use it as one name.

annmar · 20/11/2008 10:21

My name is hyphenated and has never been shortened. Anyone who tries it gets short shrift from me.

Apart from the previously mentioned problem of having to explain hyphens (my Nan uses an apostrophe, we stopped correcting her years ago), I've never really had a problem.

LouMacca · 20/11/2008 10:24

My SILs are Sara-Jane & Anne-Marie (they are known as Sara and Annie). My friend is Sally-Anne and that is how she likes to be known.

I think Sophie-Anne is much nicer.

4andnotout · 20/11/2008 10:33

My 4 dd's all have hyphenated names and we use the full name 99% of the time and 100% at school and playschool. Mine are Olivia-Mae, Elana-Rose, Maisy-Rae and Tilly-Grace

Anglepoise · 20/11/2008 22:35

I know an Anne-Sophie who is never shortened, but she is French

Kotek · 22/11/2008 20:56

Thanks, that is all really interesting. Sounds like people have had quite varied experiences!
