Love this name, and we live in France, so far so good. But I was wondering whether english family and friends would pronounce it 'Violet', or 'Violette'? Does it work in English?

Love the name-that was one of our top 5 if we had a girl.I would pronounce it violet-like the colour.

RubySlippers · 13/11/2008 20:17

violet or violette

i love them both

thisisyesterday · 13/11/2008 20:18

I would pronounce it however you pronounced it. iyswim?
if I didn't know I would probably just say Violet

Penthesileia · 13/11/2008 20:21

Ahh - Violetta, the tragic heroine of Verdi's La traviata. Sob.

Great name!

If I saw Violette, I would say: Vee-oh-let.
If I saw Violet, I would say: Vy-oh-let.

Out of curiosity, what else was in your top 5 nobodysfool? If you don't mind saying that is. We haven't definitely decided yet, we don't even know for sure we're having a girl - just my maternal instinct!

Iolanthe means violet, that was our girl name last time

I like Violet more than Violette

redrobin · 13/11/2008 20:34

gorgeous, both of them

mumof2andabit · 13/11/2008 21:38

dd was nearly violet as there are no two violets exactly the same.....

TheNewsMonger · 13/11/2008 21:50

I agree, If it was a French family I'd half expect it to be vee-o-lette.

fizzpops · 14/11/2008 09:44

Vee-o-let for me. Violet would be Vy-o-let. Unless I was told otherwise of course.

Thanks for the opinions, baby nameing is so difficult I find. Any other suggestions along the same lines as Violette?

Similar is Viola (emphasis on first syllable) but not very French.

If you want 'ette' names Mignonette popped into my head out of nowhere - think from a fairy tale I read when I was little. I googled it and it means favourite or darling which is sweet - possibly a bit ott.

Also found Nanette, Odette, Antoinette

baby names ending in ette

If you don't want another 'ette' name I haven't been much help
