Need name that works in both languages. Don't mind long or short names. Suggestions please ...!

isanybodythere - I should say I am grateful you started this thread as I have been meaning to start a similar one myself. Got ages to go and don't know if I am having a girl or boy but have been obsessing about names - particularly finding something that 'goes' with DD's name.

Was out all afternoon and evening so haven't had chance to check my thread. I'm still here!

Ran the thread past DH. Of the ones I like this is what he thinks:

Clara - pretty but may often get confused for Carla or Clare

Eva - likes

Ines - thinks people will mispronounce in the UK - inns or eenis

Alba - thinks people will mistake for Albert?!

Noa - too much like boys name Noah

Eliana - likes

Natalia - likes

Isabel - likes, but bf's daughter is Isabelle

LuLuBai - Can't understand how people would get your DD's name wrong. It's very pretty. I also like your suggestion of Rafaela but think it best to avoid names ending in ela as in the UK would get spelt ella - can see she would always be saying Rafaela - that's 1 not 2 ls!

Josefina
Teresa
Dolores/Lola
Francisca (tho I hate Paci as a shortening)

As well as Maribel I would have thought that most of the not-too-religious Mari-X's would be nice in English (we nearly called our dd Maria del Mar)

(Am remembering that DD's best guardería friends were called Kimberley & Marlon ! - were S American in origin though)

LuLuBai · 17/11/2008 09:11

Thank you isanybodythere. Very kind. I see your point about Rafaela / ella. It is difficult isn't it!

I would have thought that Ines would be easy for people to say, but then I have obviously been proved wrong on that front before!

At the moment I am thinking Miranda for a girl as it is spelt and pronounced in almost exactly the same way in both languages. Surely people couldn't get it wrong!? Trouble is I don't 100% love it.

Aaargh - I am wracking my brain and just not finding the name.

isanybodythere · 17/11/2008 20:14

Hi LuLuBai, yes it is difficult. I think Miranda sounds lovely with your DDs name, they compliment each other with both being 3 syllables. If you don't love it though, maybe it's not the one. What about Elena?

I feel quite tempted to go with a longish name so there are the options of nicknames. Which one though?!

Ooh joining the conversation a bit late but this was really useful for me too, thanks everyone!

However don't know if mine is boy or girl yet, and if it's a boy his father insists he has to to be called Jose after him. So need second name that
a) goes with Jose
b) works in English and in Spanish
so not at all difficult then.

Any suggestions gratefully received - hang on maybe I need to start a new thread for this....

Jose Luis always works and Luis is easy to understand in English.

LuLuBai · 20/11/2008 13:17

err - did you start a new thread for this? I'll have a look for that.

Jazmin73 · 01/12/2008 13:06

I have a daughter on the way, I'm married to a spanish girl and so we want to have a spanish first name for her. My wifes name is Maria Luisa but for short she is called Lui and we were thinking of Alejandra so it could be shortend to Alex.

We also like Dani if that helps
