Love the name Isabella for DD2. However my niece is called Isobel. Would you use it?

No

Too similar

jenaegi · 09/11/2008 21:49

We used Isabelle! Yes if you like the name use it! We have an Anna and her cousin is also Anna doesn't matter!

gigglewitch · 09/11/2008 21:49

I would, because I love the name. How often would she see her cousin?

singyswife · 09/11/2008 21:50

Yes they are nothing alike. If you like it use it. I like it

Dragonbutter · 09/11/2008 21:53

too similar imo

AliBean · 09/11/2008 21:57

I don't really think it matters that much - I am named after my aunty and my shortened name is the same as my mum. My DH has the same name as his dad and his eldest DS has the same name as them both!! We all just laugh about it and have code names to distinguish who we are talking about. Is your niece's name shortened to Izzy? If so perhaps you could specify DS2's name to be shortened to Bella if this is too similar.
I am planning to use both Isabella and Alexandra so we are on the same wavelength!

alexandrasmum · 09/11/2008 21:57

Thanks for quick responses!

gigglewitch, she would see her cousin about twice a year. We don't live close to each other - but we are v. close and get on well.

Anyone else? Would be helpful to add up how many of you think yes and how many think no.

my dcousins daughter is Alexia and we used Lexie (from Alexandra) similar I admit but there is a 6yr age gap and we only see them once or twice a year at most

our other daughter is Isabella nn Ella, is that an option?

Alibean loving your style

nancy75 · 09/11/2008 22:00

i have posted about this on a thread ages ago, my aunt called my cousin the same name as me and it caused world war 3 in my family, my mum hated it. you need to speak to the person that already has isobel and see what they think

colander · 09/11/2008 22:02

I chose a different name for DD1 as the one I wanted (Eleanor to be Ellie) was too similar to her cousin (Ella) and part of me does regret it, although I can't imagine her being called anything other than (strange thread this) Isobel !!

alexandrasmum · 09/11/2008 22:02

Alibean - yes niece is shortened to Izzy and we would use Bella. Would it restrict DD2 that we prefer she used only Bella as a nn?

wessexgirl · 09/11/2008 22:03

I must admit, I've avoided names that are already in the family (and there are LOTS! - I have 22 cousins). Would have loved Amelia, but it was taken.

dizzydixies · 09/11/2008 22:04

I think when she's that young the nn that you choose will stick, it'll be when she's 13 and decides she wants to be known as Izzy!! by then nobody will care

I have an Isabella nn Ella, Alexandra nn Lexie and dd3 is Cordelia

all lovely names imo

AliBean · 09/11/2008 22:05

I don't think it would restrict her...she will prob go through a phase where she wants to be called Bill or Rain or some other bizarre "quirky" name. What are you thinking of for a middle name (if any)??

alexandrasmum · 09/11/2008 22:09

nancy75 - that is my worry, that sister and bil will not be happy about it. I don't really want to ask them as I feel then that I am maybe creating an issue. I'd rather just to the right thing. I and DP love the name Isabella. I wish my niece was called something else!

AliBean · 09/11/2008 22:09

thanks dizzydixies btw!

dizzydixies · 09/11/2008 22:11

welcome Alibean!

OP - I think you should say to them that you wish to use Bella and would like Isabella on the birth certificate as a proper name for later on in life but wanted to run it past them incase they had an issue with it

Bella is nothing like Izzy and although they've already used the name they don't have ownership of it and when put like that how can they refuse?

beanieb · 09/11/2008 22:13

How close in age is the cousin and how close are they. If she's a lot older than I wouldn't worry but some people can get twitichy about things like this.

My best mate had a son called Harry and was mortified when her sil called her daughter Harriet. In retaliation, when her daughter was born, she called her Olivia. Her sister in law's older child is called Oliver.

meh! bloody internet!

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 09/11/2008 22:16

alexandrasmum · 09/11/2008 22:16

dizzydixies - thanks for the suggestion, hadn't thought of approaching it in that way. Your DDs all have lovely name.

alibean - no middle name sorted yet, we want to decide on a definite first name. Once we've decided, perhaps I should come on MN again for middle name suggestions!

use it if you like it.

Similar named cousins is not a huge problem.

dizzydixies · 09/11/2008 22:17

thank you

thumbwitch · 09/11/2008 22:18

can't see it being a problem really. I have 2 cousins, both named the same and I would also have had a brother named the same name (if he had lived after birth - no chance of that sadly). So there would have been 3 of them of the same generation with the same name!
