we really liked Layla but surname has lots of 'l's in it so it sounded too much..so shortened to Leia (pronounced Laya) - its not a common name and dont want to tell friends and family so would appreciate your thoughts!

I like it, mainly because its simalar to my name. Very pretty name.

SpongebobComfypants · 08/11/2008 12:52

Star Wars.

Cies · 08/11/2008 12:53

I like it.

I also like Leah.

vicbob30 · 08/11/2008 12:59

is star wars a bad thing? princess leia was pretty feisty and beautiful...not an association i would be upset with we also thought a child growing up now would may not have the same association with star wars being quite old?

Princess?

It conjures up pictures of buns of hair over ears.

ZZZen · 08/11/2008 13:00

Don't like it all, sorry but you'll never find a name everyone likes

vicbob30 · 08/11/2008 13:04

definately not calling her princess! just leia...

Right, I've just asked ds (aged 8) if he has ever heard of the name Leia.

His answer - "what, like the woman out of star wars?"

My reply - "is that what you first thought of?"

ds & dd (aged 13) - "durrrr, who else would it be!"

Having said that, they both said they liked the name!

vicbob30 · 08/11/2008 13:08

thank you girlandboy! we were looking at Layla and Freya and I accidentally said Leia while stood cooking dinner and we fell in love with it but i guess we both did say - princess leia really quickly too...DP has a not particularly great surname so we are trying not to add potential for mickey taking while picking something pretty!

I do think it's a pretty name (as do my kids), but I do have visions of people holding two chelsea buns against their ears while saying the name!

RachieB · 08/11/2008 15:19

I like it

FiveDollarShake · 08/11/2008 15:28

Lovely name. Also like Leah a lot too.

Plonker · 08/11/2008 21:30

I think its very pretty

Will be a bugger for folk to spell though ...

Wezzle · 08/11/2008 21:43

I like it

agree with Plonker...it will never be spelled correctly

mumnosbest · 08/11/2008 21:43

YEY!
My little girl 14 months is called Lea spelt differently but said the same. Everyone says it's a pretty and unusual name and only had a few (non-negative) comments on princess Leia. It's also easy for LO's to say, she learnt to say it at 11.5 months. Adults struggle though, her Nan keeps calling her Leah . Our version is an Albanian name (DH family are Albanian), more common there.

In short I love the name, but am biased

TheSmallClanger · 08/11/2008 21:54

It does have a pretty ring to it, but there's no escaping the fact that it's from a sci-fi film, and people will judge you the same way they would if you called your son Obi-Wan.

BINAH · 08/11/2008 22:08

leah?

ScottishMummy · 08/11/2008 22:20

phonetically i would say Leia as Lee-ah not laya

vicbob30 · 10/11/2008 13:15

there is a spelling Laia also pronounced Leia. but it is definately not pronounced lee - ah...does anyone prefer Leila then? Also if you called your little one Margaret then you would think of Maggie Thatcher or Cheryl would be Cheryl Cole so there would be associations with lots of names so wondering if that is a negative?

Not keen on Leia (pronounced Lay-a?)... but I do like Layla.
