Girls' names...?

Hi, we are trying for 2nd baby... only problem is, if successful and it's a girl I will struggle to find a suitable girl's name. I know it's a bit premature to be thinking about this, but anyhow I am.

I had no shortage of choices for a boy's name, we eventually settled on Theophilus (Theo for short) after an ancester. But I also liked Guy, Rory, Charles, Henry, Gus, Christian and Archie (so if I have 7 boys no problems!)

There is/was one name I quite like for a girl -Mercedes- but was horrified to read somewhere on the internet that it was a 'chav' name?! This could only be, I assume, ignorance on the part of the writer who presumably thought the name was after the car brand, whereas I thought it was the founder of the car manufacturer who actually named the brand after his daughter not the other way around! (ie Mercedes was a name before the brand was invented).

Anyway, I digress. If anyone feels like sharing any nice, distinctive girls' names which seem to be the female counterparts of the types of male names above, I would love to hear some ideas.

(PS I am new here and have no idea what some of the abbreviations mean - eg DS - DH etc?!)

welcome to mumsnet. There is an acronym list under 'useful stuff' at the top of the screen.
Very simply dh and ds are darling husband and son.

What about Christiana or Theodora?

I personally don't like Mercedes very much.

Mercedes if you were Spanish speaking would be cool, but otherwise it sounds odd in British English (imho).

What about Rosa, Charlotte, Emily, Emma, Anna, Harriet, Kirsten?

I love your boys' names. Really nice list.

I don't like Mercedes much either, but I read somebody somewhere using Sadie as a nn for it. But Ithink that was an Hispanic person living in New York.

What do you like? Classic? Eccentric?

Urban chic (Polly, Dulcie, Sadie, Lois, Margot, Nancy, Edith, Esme)

If you like Spanish names, what about Paloma?

no offence intended here but mercedes is a pretty awful (slutty) character in the soap hollyoaks. sorry but thats who immediately springs to mind. your boys choices make me think you would want some thing entirely different for your little one!

possibly something with greek origin to go with Theo - lydia perhaps??

good luck choosing.

I like the name, I have a lovely cousin in her 70's called Mercedes.

PavlovtheCat · 08/11/2008 08:52

Scout

I like the name Mercedes but wouldn't be brave enough to use it for my child.

I already have 2 girls, if i had another i would be stuck for names, Dd1 is Holly (dh chosse this), Dd2 is Saffron (my choice) but we didn't choose her name until the week before she was born.

I like Lexi for a girl but would call her Alexandra (lexi for short).

Fav boys names;
Charlie
Alex
Luke
Mathew
Saul
Archie

I think Mercedes is an odd choice if you aren't Spanish/Hispanic.

How about:

Claudia
Lydia
Jessamy
Florence
Louisa
Elizabeth
Imogen
Tamsin

If you like it use it. We are Irish - one child has a Latin name, one Catalan, one of Turkish origin. Two aren't really unusual, one is but easy to spell and say.

Mickeylou, thanks for enlightening me, (have never watched Hollyoaks!)
