Just a tiny bit of info about Ezra. Whatever name you choose, you'll do a bit of research, so if you did go ahead with it, you'd be interested in this information I guess!

Ezrâ was a Jewish priestly scribe who led about 5,000 Israelite exiles living in Babylon to their home city of Jerusalem in 459 BCE or 428 BCE or 397 BCE. He reconstituted the dispersed Jewish community on the basis of the Torah. According to the Hebrew Bible, Ezra resolved the identity threat which arose by the intermarriage between Jews and foreigners and provided a definite reading of the Torah. Ezra is highly respected in the Jewish tradition. His knowledge of the Torah is considered to have been equal with Moses. Like Moses, Enoch, and David, Ezra is given the honorific title of "scribe" and is referred to as עזרא הסופר or "Ezra the scribe" in the Jewish tradition.

Liffey · 06/11/2008 21:06

Hmm. The hebrew didn't work!

Fillyjonk · 06/11/2008 21:09

eh? about ezra

I know several small ezras, I don't think any of them are jewish

most old testament names steeped in jewish history are also significant for christians. i know ezras a bit of a special case cos hes more important perhaps through tradition iykwim but still.

i think calling a Protestant child Chaim or Moshe or Ya'el might raise an eyebrow but ezra seems fine!

MrsJamesMartin · 06/11/2008 21:09

I like all of them although not too keen on Cornelius.
Seth is my fave, its ds' name.

frazzledoldbag34 · 06/11/2008 21:12

Sorry, not keen.

NotanOtterOHappyDay · 06/11/2008 21:19

loving Thaddeus and Zebedee

Z was on my shortlist for this baby and if i had been braver

I was still QUITE brave and there was a very special silence yesterday followed by 'Why?' when i told someone his name

Ignore negative comments Bronze and be strong - you will be glad you did!

Seth. From your list.

Sidge · 06/11/2008 21:31

I don't like any of them I'm afraid.

And round here Seth would get called Seff!

dinkymum · 06/11/2008 21:51

My faves from your list would be: Eli, Elijah, Jesse, Seth, Solomon. Jesse especially.
Considered this for my DD.

liger · 06/11/2008 22:27

Amos or Seth from your list.

What about Samson?

seeker · 07/11/2008 07:09

You just can't call a boy Jesse. you just can't!

And I am pretty sure there should be a law against calling one Zebedee as well!

Just stop and think You are naming a baby - but you are also potentially naming a shy reserved spotty book loving teenage boy, a bank manager, a labourer, a funeral director, an old man who wants to be taken seriously by the staff at the nursing home......

Umlellala · 07/11/2008 08:12

Like your list, Seeker. I also have 'I well fancy xxx' (for when they are a 17yo boy)!

Think Jesse suits all scenerios though (maybe not Zebedee... Zeb?)

My personal opinion:
Abraham - too 'big' a name.
Amos - like, reminds me of a cute kid called Ambrose
Cornelius - no, don't like the sound of this one
Eli - nice
Elijah - nice,
Eliah - not keen
Elias - nice
Ezra - nice
Gideon - horrible sounding name 'gi'
Ira,- ok
Jesse - ok
Jonas - again don't really like sound of it
Levi - nice
Seth - nice
Silas - ok
Simeon - no, though I like Simon
Solomon - ok
Thaddeus - sounds too Greek to me (I like greek names but thought you wanted biblical)
Zebedee - i have named my child a so called 'ridiculous' name but... hmmm... find it hard,... would get used to it though...

Like biblical names though - Ezekiah? Zachariah?

bronze · 07/11/2008 08:26

Liffey
I get your point though I do know the story behind all these names/people from a biblical point of view.

Seeker- Its a good thing Zebedees in the bottom 10 of those 20 for me really isnt it

I know several Jesse though of various ages and they're all cool in their own way.
I'm hoping to give my children confidence in the world. My name is a known but unusual one and I actually think it helped me rather than hindered me.

Ok My 10 ten out of those

Amos - (makes me want to continue singing Obadiah..)
Eli -
Elijah
Elias -
Gideon -
Jesse -
Jonas -
Levi -
Saul (added)
Solomon - lovely

not Seth only because a friends boy is one.

Another thing is having Paul, Peter (for example) and Elijah I dont think too many people would think. Oh but Elijahs Jewish.
As a list it does give more than impression but we would only be having one name.

SquiffyHock · 07/11/2008 08:37

Sidge - I have been reading this thread thinking that I would 'present' the name Seth to DH as it's lovely until I read your comment!! Would also be Seff here
Back to the drawing board...

Tortington · 07/11/2008 08:49

Abraham, rahter long - ABE would be the nick, v. different - kinda like it

Amos, larvely

Cornelius, - pretentious.
Eli, - lots about recently
Eliah,ditto
Elijah,ditto
Elias, pretentious - dunno why
Ezra, girly
Gideon, this name just seems RIPE for pisstake
Ira, i think of an old jew
Jonas, larvely - Joe
Levi, chavvy! i know i know but it so is
Seth, larvely
Silas, larvely - although think on, the evil guy in heroes is called that and it might become a cult classic
Simeon, nice
Solomon, grundy was born on a monday nah dunno why - i suppose the shortened Sol whould be trez trendy

Thaddeus pretentious trying too hard

and Zebedee....magic fucking roundabout!!!!

i can't tell you how in love with old testament names i am. enjoyed doing this!

seeker · 07/11/2008 08:53

I hate to labour the point - but in this country now, Jesse is a girl's name. And in Scotland it means a weak, feeble, pathetic person. I know the spelling's different, but the sound isn't.

I agree with bringing up children to be confident in the world - and maybe an unusual name could help with this (not convinced, though!) But I really don't see why giving a boy a girl's name would help with this. You wouldn't call a girl Bernard!

lol@ calling a Protestant child Chaim or Moshe

OK, fair point!

ForeverOptimistic · 07/11/2008 11:16

They are all to biblical for me.

I prefer thatsnotmymontster's choices.

ForeverOptimistic · 07/11/2008 11:16

too not to.

girlandboy · 07/11/2008 11:20

Glad Saul wasn't on original list, coz that't my dh's name!

Though I see bronze doesn't like it - hmmmph!

Mind you, beware of using it! No-one ever gets it right. When you say the name, the answer is always "WHAT?"

girlandboy · 07/11/2008 11:21

oh no, read back again! I think bronze DOES like it! That's good then.....

bronze · 07/11/2008 11:21

I added it because I forgot it. Looka couple of posts up. Its in my top 10 .
My only wariness was it was Pauls original names before he was good
