What names can be shortened to Tilly?

My DH would like to call our DD Tilly, which I think is a nickname, not a proper name. I dont like Hilda, Tilda or Matilda though. Can anyone think of any other girls names that could have Tilly or Till as a nickname?

I know a girl called Ottilie who was known as Tilly

findtheriver · 01/11/2008 18:40

You're correct, Tilly is a nickname not a real name. If you don't like the names that have it as an abbreviation then I think you need to agree on something different. No good having a name one of you really doesn't like is there.

matilda

Talitha

Tilly Mint:

This is an endearing admonishment used for a female Scouser who has ideas above her station. The male equivalent is 'Dicky Mint'.

my mum calls dd tilly mint,

i thought it was just a nice/silly nickname,

i had never googled it before now...

My friends DD is called Till - not short for another name - just Tilly.

I love it!

2point4kids · 01/11/2008 18:56

My eldest sons half sister is just called Tilly ! not short fro anything

rosealbie · 02/11/2008 11:02

My niece is called Tilly, again not short for anything. I personally don't see it as a nickname but consider it a 'proper' name.

VictorianSqualor · 02/11/2008 11:05

Thalia.
Tallulah

mumnosbest · 02/11/2008 11:13

Does it really matter if it's a nickname? Loads of once nicknames are now used as 'proper' names; Robbie (Robert), Cassy, Sam, Milly, Joe, Beth, Max, Zak... The list goes on! If you like the name Tilly, I'd use it. It beats apple or coco imo and I think it's a lovely name

Tillyscoutsmum · 02/11/2008 11:18

I think it is used as a name in its own right but ikwym about wanting something longer. DD is a Matilda and it doesn't really get used at the moment. I think its more suited to older dc's or adults and is a bit too grown up for a small child. She may chose to use it or another abbreviation herself when she's older.

I love Ottilie as well though. Very pretty

VictorianSqualor · 02/11/2008 11:18

Personally I wouldn't use just Tilly. DD has a friend called Tilly, but it doesn't feel like a 'real' name to me, and I have a nickname as a name for one of my DCs. DS1 is 'Bobby' just Bobby, because I really didn't like Robert, whereas DS2 is 'Alex' shortened from Alexander. I think we all have different opinions on what counts as a whole name

CuppaTeaJanice · 02/11/2008 11:50

Please bear in mind though that in some parts of the country Tilly is another name for fanjo - i.e. boys have willies, girls have tillies.

Pretty name though.

VictorianSqualor · 02/11/2008 11:52

REALLY?!??!?!

combustiblelemon · 02/11/2008 11:53

Where?

CuppaTeaJanice · 02/11/2008 11:59

I first heard the term used by a guy from Bedfordshire.

VictorianSqualor · 02/11/2008 12:05

Just one guy? Or many?
I know people from Bedfordshire and they certainly don't call it a tilly.

CuppaTeaJanice · 02/11/2008 12:38

Maybe it was just his family & friends then.

He was a bit strange...

RachieB · 02/11/2008 16:38

what about girls called Poppy or Mary ???

both words I have heard used for girls bits lol !
