Is there such a thing?

Is there such a thing as classic but unusual boys name? DH wants Hector and I like Alexander although I'd like a name that's not in the top 50. Can only hope 'King Prawn' is a girl; their names are so much easier!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Cies · 31/10/2008 10:02

I'd agree that names like Richard, Robert, Michael, Peter, Paul are classic and not very popular as baby names atm.

MadreInglese · 31/10/2008 10:03

LOL @ "currently in production"

Liffey · 31/10/2008 10:20

I think Richie is fantastic. I'd use that but put Richard on the bc.

aj13 · 31/10/2008 10:32

I like Theo, Tristan, Reece and Hamish.

aj13 · 31/10/2008 10:34

I also like Jed (my dh name!!) :-)

golds · 31/10/2008 10:40

I have a Christopher - just love it timeless

noonki · 31/10/2008 10:51

Fasinating what is considered timeless, most of the suggestions would have resulted in endless teasing when I was at school (am 34, I like loads of them but wouldnt consider them timeless.

what do you consider timeless yessir?

Liffey · 31/10/2008 10:53

Although I wouldn't pick David or Michael, they are both still in the top 100 I think. As is Robert, which I do like.

Richard is about number 500 or something! I really wanted to call my son Richard/Richie. Wasn't allowed. I still prefer it to what he is actually called.

Bubbaluv · 31/10/2008 11:10

Noonki, I think Christopher is the only name here suggested to be timeless no? I think it is too.
I agree that a lot of the old fashioned names coming back would have been a source of much playground humiliation not too long ago. Imagine being Humphrey or Victor or Seymor and 13yo in 1990!

girlandboy · 31/10/2008 11:15

My dh's name is Saul.

He gets quite shirty if we ever see it elsewhere (the credits of tv programs etc). He gets a bit precious about it, though it is surprising how many people don't get it right ie. Sol, Sole, Soul

noonki · 31/10/2008 12:32

Bubba - Glad I wasn't the only one! thought I grew up in a weird spacewarp where Claire and Steve were really unusual elsewhere!

My ex DP was Victor he is now about 45 and he HATED it, I think it is quite sweet now, though dont think DH would agree!

Cheesesarnie · 31/10/2008 12:35

i like edward or edwin

MrsMattie · 31/10/2008 12:38

some of the worst names ever suggested on MN are on this thread... Torquil, Hillary, Bertram, Ken

Bubbaluv · 31/10/2008 12:42

I do worry that these revived names will sounds just as ridiculous in 15 years times as they did 15 years ago. Will today's trendy little Mavis be tomorrow's "Yes I was born in 1974" Crystal?

Cheesesarnie · 31/10/2008 12:44

MrsMattie

what are saying about my beloved ds- Torquil- Bertram ?

hs delightful

PuppyMonkey · 31/10/2008 12:47

Haven't read the whole thread as I couldn't get past Torquil but I nominate Jasper and Sebastian...

nailpolish · 31/10/2008 12:49

Stuart
Ian
Russell

PheasantPlucker · 31/10/2008 12:52

I love Victor, my Grandpa was Victor! (Victor Clifford)

Liffey · 31/10/2008 12:56

It's a great name. I am not joking when I say I love Victor and Bruce. They're so cool. I want to change my son's name to Victor Bruce. He's 3, but he's an easy going little guy!

Iloveautumn · 31/10/2008 13:00

MrsMattie - I agree!

Surely you'd have to be a cruel kind of parent to name a boy a boy/girl name like Hilary or Evelyn, just because you like it?!!!

lljkk · 31/10/2008 13:10

Vincent, Gerald, Terrence, Maurice,

Liffey · 31/10/2008 14:31

yeah, they may have been boys' names once, but it'd be no different to calling a boy Amelia now.
