I don't get it.

Ok if you use the spelling Bo but the spelling Beau definitely makes it masculine.

Does it???

I wouldn't have thought so myself but what do I know?

I'd have thought Bo was masculine and Beau was feminine.

nappyaddict · 28/10/2008 14:47

Well in French Belle = feminine Beau = masculine.

Bo in Swedish/Danish is masculine.

But I am told Bo in Chinese is unisex.

Apparently Isobel was a corruption of Elizabeth that started off as Isabeau until someone realised it was masculine!

Have to worry about some people sometimes.

twosofar · 28/10/2008 15:23

why would you call a girl beau?

....because you are not very bright

EachPeachPearMum · 28/10/2008 15:32

Well, probably more because you are ignorant or illiterate!

fizzbuzz · 28/10/2008 16:31

I teach a girl called Beau...........and there was one mentioned on Milkshake yesterday

Nancy66 · 28/10/2008 21:02

No I wouldn't or Bo - just a bit daft.

LuLuBai · 29/10/2008 09:49

Beau is definitely masculine. Means 'handsome'. Silly name for a girl. Oh - and GirlandBoy I know a dog called Beau too. Definitely a man-dog.

littleducks · 29/10/2008 10:01

I met one once, she was blonde and girly with a very'yummy mummy' mother so it seems feminine to me now, never realised that it was masculine, i always remembered monsters inc at how cultured i am

conkertree · 29/10/2008 11:07

Could it originally have come from a shortening of Isabeau?

This suggests it is Hebrew in origin.

Agree that if it is a name in itself rather than a shortening of somehting like Isabeau then it looks a bit odd

nappyaddict · 29/10/2008 19:34

No the name is just Beau - not a shortening for anything.
