Delia and Delilah

What do people think or these, which do you prefer? I'd like to use Dolly as a short form for either, though I also like Lia and Lilah.

Middle name would probably be Agnes or Rose, though with Joy and Serendipity as possibilites.

I think that my preference would be to use Dolly as a stand alone name - very sweet. I can't think of Delia without thinking of the cook and Delilah should have a Samson.

Your middle names sound lovely as a complete name - Rose Agnes or Agnes Rose work

UncleHester · 26/10/2008 20:16

I like both. The only one of your names I'm not convinced by is Serendipity, tbh. Delia-the-cook will soon fade from collective memory and that and Delilah are both lovely.

zeee · 26/10/2008 20:27

Yes, I'm not convinced by Serendipity either!

Delia Rose and Delilah Rose both work well I think. Not sure that Delia Agnes does, but Delilah Agnes seems to

Delilah is nice - Delia is frumpy and just makes you think of a middle aged cookery writer.

Delia Joy is beautiful. I would go for Cordelia Joy though. I don't like Delilah. For bible reasons and it's not a good sound. I read on babycenter.com that it was one name tipped to rise dramatically, because it can be shortened to Lila

Move beyond Delia Smith Nancy! YOU CAN DO IT. It's a beautiful sound. And besides, she's just a rich successful cook. Not an axe murderer.

Nancy66 · 26/10/2008 20:42

Delia Joy sounds like a 50 year old hairdresser

LynetteScavo · 26/10/2008 20:44

Delia

Delilah

Liffey · 26/10/2008 20:48

Nancy. Get with the programme. Middle-aged chic is just around the corner. Sylvia Belinda, Vivien Joyce come on down.

Nancy66 · 26/10/2008 20:50

I live Sylvia - but some names are never going to be chic:

Brian
Bernard
Sheila
Pauline

to name but a few - Delia is that ilk

Liffey · 26/10/2008 20:52

No way! Check the yankee stats! Where there is no Delia smith letsbe'avin ye baggage, Delia is rising up the charts very steadily.

Brian, Bernard, Sheila and Pauline are a bit behind! But I BET we will have grandchildren with names as horrible as these.

Nancy66 · 26/10/2008 20:54

Oh god I hope not - I don't think you can use the Yanks as a good reference point - Kevin is as popular there as Jack is here.

hf128219 · 26/10/2008 20:56

I knew a Dolly at school - it's a nice name and if you like it use it!

Liffey · 26/10/2008 20:56

I think the yankee stats are a good guide. If Delia becomes mainstream in the US, then it will creep into the wider consciousness, and then, just when Delia Smith is wheeled off to an old people's home, never to be heard of again, some minor sleb will call their dd Delia and that's all it will take.

It is a 'Violet' kind of name. Not to everybody's taste, but it is a classic Victorian name, which is rising.

Nancy66 · 26/10/2008 20:58

Sylvie and Violet are my top two names - but anyway we are hijacking poor Zeee's thread and I actually love Dolly - think it's dead cute. However I can only imagine a Dolly aged 0-6 and then aged 75-100 and not inbetween

Liffey · 26/10/2008 21:01

hee hee, five years and a cold winter is all it takes to make a name conjure up the image of a cute 3 yr old rather than a wizzened 89 yr old gurning with a tartan blanket over her crinkly knees.

Phew, we agree on Sylvie and Violet. Both fantastic names.
