Help me work out how how the hell I can ever shorten DDs name when I don't like any of the 'official' short forms. Please.

DD is called Isabella and although I love the name it's not necessarily one I'd have chosen, had things been different. I can explain if you want, but it's a bit of a long story.

I always just call her by her full name, the length doesn't bother me and fortunately it's nowhere near as common where I am as it is in the UK.

Anyway, DC2 is on the way and will probably end up with a longish name too (for balance). One full time long form I can cope with. Two seems, well, a bit poncey TBH

Neither DP or I like

Isabel
Izzy
Bel
Bella

We disagree on

Isa (pronounced Ee-sa) - 'tis very common here, DP thinks that's fine but I don't.
Ella - I like it, DP doesn't.

She's nearly one and no hint of a nickname has ever been detected. So, help what short of creative shortning could we use?

I knew an Isabella who was known as Zazie

Podrick · 29/10/2008 19:29

Go for her middle name or a nickname that suits her but is unrelated to her actual name

seems v odd to call your child a name you don't like though - was it to please a wealthy and ancient spinster aunt?

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 29/10/2008 19:32

You'll probably find it difficult to get in the mind set of shortening the name you know
We named our DD Evelyn, and always thought she'd be Evie. nobody calls her Evie. She's Evelyn. She's been Evelyn too long to be Evie iyswim!

mynameisluka · 29/10/2008 19:34

Bea is really sweet but as you already have a friend called it what about Bibi? Even nicer!

DeJaVousdoo · 29/10/2008 19:37

Almost Podrick, dying uncle. I do like Isabella, very much, but if the situation had been different I probably wouldn't have used it. 'tis a long story, I explained earlier.

Bibi is sweet but it is used a lot over here. Another maybe (maybe).

oops.

You're right Elf, it seems really strange to call her something shorter. Two long name together just sounds poncy to me

My friend's toddler is Isabella but calls herself Bibi

QOD · 29/10/2008 20:23

I know an Isabella - we call her
"Tink"

DeJaVousdoo · 29/10/2008 20:34

Bibi is definitely a grower. So, two options now Bessy and Bibi.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone!

A girl at school called Isabella was known as Tish - I think that's quite nice and would consider it for a DD if other family hadn't got there first.

I wouldn't shorten it unless you want to. My mum chose my name as she thought it couldn't be shortened, but my grandma did within a few days.

kiLLf · 29/10/2008 23:08

cockney rhyming slang?

Isabella - Cinderella - Cindy

Isabella - umbrella - Brell

and so on.

kiLLf · 29/10/2008 23:10

isabella - abuela - abbie

Cheesesarnie · 29/10/2008 23:16

SoupDragon · 30/10/2008 09:11

"I was going to suggest you have another kid too and let them decide"

DS1 was called "brother" by BabyDragon for some time.

Cheesesarnie · 30/10/2008 11:58

Bubbaluv · 30/10/2008 13:13

or what about Elle

DeJaVousdoo · 30/10/2008 17:21

Berry is sweet, but berrie is a hand cart in Dutch. The language problem is endless
