Where has the OP gone? Or is this a wind-up?

Wow, maybe I am naive but I just saw the OP stating that she had finally made her mind up about a name. Bracken is the name and she is happy.
It seems horribly spiteful to say such nasty things about her name choice when she didnt even ask for opinions!

Would you honestly say such things in real life if someone said to you 'I'm going to name my baby X' (note the lack of 'what do you think?' there)

I personally wouldnt have chosen Bracken if I had had a daughter, but Tink (and most of you lot) would probably think my childrens names are dreadfully dull!
If I had started this thread I would be very upset by now I have to say.

CoteDAzur · 27/10/2008 09:10

Why start a thread on Baby Names if you don't want to hear comments?

2point4kids · 27/10/2008 09:13

I assume because she had started threads before and had been undecided and is now announcing that she has decided!

Are you not allowed to start threads on here unless you are specifically requesting opinions then?
Sometimes I start threads just to tell a funny story

CoteDAzur · 27/10/2008 09:19

It's just that in my years on MN I have never seen a thread on Baby Names that gets only "You go girl!" "Great choice!" etc

But if that is what OP wanted...

If I may make one comment, though: Out of pure respect for syllable count and how it flows off the tongue, imho, Bracken Willow Hope sounds better than Bracken Hope Willow.

moyasmum · 27/10/2008 09:36

If you have made a reasoned decision ,after testing out opinions here, then good for you.

allytjd · 27/10/2008 10:20

Knew a pony called Bracken (and it was male). The meaning of names are important, I am irrationally annoyed when I meet children whose name means black -haired ,for example, and they are blonde. If you like plant names, get a plant dictionary out and find something with qualities you like and a nice sound or look up the Victorian language of flowers, they had meanings (like a code) for all sorts of flowers and plants (the origin of names like Ivy and Rosemary I think, although I'm not reccommending those!).

allytjd · 27/10/2008 10:26

Have just checked out the language of flowers on wikipedia, only one or two good ideas there but i can think of a few people who would suit "Lobelia" meaning malevolence!

autumnwardrobeonthecheap · 27/10/2008 10:49

brychan / bracken doesn't have to mean a plant! It's a Welsh prince

DippyDora · 27/10/2008 11:32

Cote - what does syllable count mean >

SoupDragon · 27/10/2008 12:52

OP did say "you will all be relieved to know that I am going to stick with Bracken " and some were pointing out that we're not relieved at all.

kittywise · 27/10/2008 14:33

FGS If you don't want people to comment then don't post on here

I actually do think this whole name is a wind up because no one in their right mind would actually think of it as a name to give a child(poor kid)

autumnwardrobeonthecheap · 27/10/2008 15:10

Kittywise, I know at least 4 children who have that name in Wales!

SesHasapinkline · 27/10/2008 15:17

Woooaaah!!!

FWIW - there is nothing offensive about the name that tink has chosen. We can all have our opinions - mine is that it is v pretty but a little too unusual for me. It is her choice and she wasn't asking for our opinion, she was letting those of us interested know that she's settled on a name. It may not be what I would choose but then, I'm hoping that the names I have picked out for DC1 will be ones that lots of other people will not choose either!

Thank goodness we all like different names as otherwise life would be very boring, and very complicated if we all had the same name!

kittywise · 27/10/2008 15:26

is the OP Welsh?

tinkisinthe3rdtrimester · 27/10/2008 15:39

But thought you had chosen Scarlett?? I am confused

tinkisinthe3rdtrimester · 27/10/2008 15:44

i only went with scarlett beacause i dared to start a thread on the name bracken which i luv and think is so pretty , got more or less all negative responses so picked the next name that i liked scarlett just doesnt sit as well for me. i am staying wioth my original choice beacause it fits

autumnwardrobeonthecheap · 27/10/2008 16:06

good for you Tink it's a lovely name xx

BabyBaby123 · 27/10/2008 16:07

Atlanta and Scarlett go better than Atlanta and Bracken imo.

Atlanta and Scarlett are not particularly unusual round here I have to say but Bracken is of the Brogen, Regan, Tegan variety imo

MmeTussaudsChmberOfChocHobnobs · 27/10/2008 16:13

Good for you Tink, if that is the name that you have chosen then go for it.

I would not go for such an unusual name but I admire people who are brave enough to do so. Once the baby is here (and I hope she takes her time!) then she will just be Bracken.

You maybe should hold off on telling Auntie Willma though, Tink.

Although, after all the comments on this thread I guess nothing is going to phase you

nappyaddict · 27/10/2008 17:32

oh Aspen probably not a good suggestion if your other dd is Atlanta.

nappyaddict · 27/10/2008 17:33

Btw is it Atlanta or Atalanta?

Sycupatree · 27/10/2008 17:44

It's Atlanta.
