Yesenia Jade

for a girl (prounounced either Yesenia or Jesenia) Jes for short

It's the only one we can agree on. And I looove it.

Background-- Dh is Mexican, I'm American and we wanted a name that reflected her Latina roots, yet still pronounceable to both sides of the family.

I also prefer it with a Y, because if it's Jesenia, and people know it's a Mexian name, then that'll be confusing and they'll use their Spanish knowledge and say Hesenia.

But It#s flexible and you both like it!

DO you like Yolanda?

Liffey · 23/10/2008 20:29

Xenia could be a possible nn. That x gives it a Mexian flavour!

Tigerschick · 24/10/2008 08:34

I was thinking that last night, Liffey. If you want it to be said the same by Spanish- and English-speakers then you need to use a Y as (as Liffey says) J is pronounced H in Spanish.

I teach a girl called Ksenia (silent K) and I've heard her friends calling her Nia as a nn ... which is an option.

CountessDracula · 24/10/2008 09:57

@ Xenia

Nancy66 · 24/10/2008 10:30

Not wild about it - think she'll be forever spelling her name and putting up with people that can't pronounce it properly.

ShowOfHands · 24/10/2008 10:35

MKG, I like it. It also goes well with DS1 and DS2's respective names. Jade I'm not so keen on but only because of its usage over here. Over the pond it might still be a beautiful name.

MKG's in America by the way. Can't convince her to move over here, though I have tried.

And btw, A GIRL!! Congratulations.

Yersinia is the cause of bubonic plague as well as rat diseases.
Sorry, but that's what I thought of 1st when I saw it...

MKGisHavingaGirl · 24/10/2008 13:02

Well it doesn't matter anymore dh came home and vetoed Yesenia last night.

MKGisHavingaGirl · 24/10/2008 13:58

No, he saw it in movie a few years ago and still loves it.

If you're gonna have a culturally different name that has to be spelt every time for other people, why not go all out - I like Xochitl, btw.

MadreInglese · 24/10/2008 14:43

Xochitl?

I have a surname that originates in another country

No one can ever pronounce it, no one can every spell it

Don't do that to your child

Liffey · 24/10/2008 20:22

Xochitl!?! Me duelen los ojos! no lo haga!

How about "Sophie Rachel" with nn of Sochel, pronounced socheel.

LuLuBai · 24/10/2008 20:31

Errr - you need to clonk your DH over the head with something heavy and hope he forgets he ever thought of Xochitl.

Yesenia is pretty (def supposed to be pronounced with a y sound). It's one that I have thought of myself in my quest to find unusual-ish but still proper names that work in Spanish and English.

The name I really, really love but cannot use is Eulalia. I also quite like Yolanda but it is a bit 70s (in Spain, I don't know about Mexico).

Good luck

Bloodandchatkins · 24/10/2008 20:32

I like it !

mogwai · 29/10/2008 14:13

no no no

not a good name

mags98 · 29/10/2008 21:48

By the way, to the person who mentioned Melenia above - do you know what melena is medically? lets put it this way - it is something rather unpleasant to do with the bowels. Not something I would want my child called!

nuthacuppatea · 30/10/2008 07:45

Lovely. Love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
